Well, my old 1600cc is pretty much capoot, and so I'm in the market for a new engine. I always had problems on the highway with the engine and so as I'm rebuilding this one, I was going to get a slightly bigger sized engine, like a 1776 or something. But my big concern is trying to make the car look as stock as possible, i want a single carb, and no chrome plating or special paint. Is there any websites or specific engines that anyone could recommend to give my bug an authentic look and sound, but just a slightly bigger push on the highway?

Idea You will get all kinds of responses for a larger engine like a 1776 with bigger valves and dual carbs etc.....I'd pass on those ideas.

As an engine builder I installed a 1641 in a 71 bus I had b ought with a blown engine.

Drove it from L.A. to New Mexico to Mexico City to Acapulco and back along the Pacific coast to L.A. getting 18-20 MPG the whole trip....cannot beat that.

The 1641 will work with SP or DP heads.

Just a thought based upon personal experience.
