|
|
I have a VW trike The other day my coil came loose & dropped off the doghouse. It shorted out several wires. I have since replaced all the wires that were burnt. My problem is that now when I go to start the starter drive will not disengage. I bought another starter & installed it. It does the same thing.
I have a wire from the ignition swithch to the solenoid. There is 1 wire going to the coil from the ign switch. Another wire comes from the alt to the positive post on the solenoid,
I'm thinking I have missed a wire or a wire where it shouldn't be. Could the short have damaged the ign switch and/or the alt?
I am stumped. Thank You |

So am I understanding correctly that the starter constantly cranks with the key in the "ON" position? Not just the "Start" position?
Did you rewire the ignition switch as well? The wire for the solenoid should be on the "START" terminal, the coil should be on the "ON" Terminal. I would disconnect the starter for now (so it's not trying to crank when you're farting around.) Then disconnect the ignition wire from the solenoid. Then take a Multimeter and with the key "ON" see if you are getting voltage to the solenoid at the "ON" as well as the "START" terminals on the ignition. You shouldn't. If you are, then the ignition switch got burned up and is shorting the ON and START circuits together.
You can also check for Continuity with your OHM meter between the ignition post on the solenoid and the CONSTANT power post on the solenoid with the wires disconnected. AS well as continuity between the Constant Power and the Starter Power posts. There should be no continuity between any of these. If there is continuity there (and the solenoid somehow burned up) it would essentially be shorting itself out to always be cranking. My money would be on the ignition though... as a short in the solenoid would result in the starter ALWAYS cranking whenever the battery is hooked up... but I don't think that is what you are describing is happening... _________________ 1979 Westfalia, 1975 BMW 2002, 1996 Mazda Miata, 1979 Jeep CJ5, 2006 325 XI Wagon, 2021 M240i (all manual transmission... as god intended.) |
