Are you thinking about adding a second tank? The reason I ask is I have considered it too (I have a spare tank) but hadn't figured how I would do it- any ideas? I figured the best way would be to install a valve between the two tanks so I could select either one. If you had them plumbed together they would equalize. _________________ '78 Westy

| No, I just want to have a spare. I think mine is a little rusty. It works, and can be filled, but I'd like to have another one- just in case. It would also give me time to have it blasted/painted. |

Yeah I heard about putting the propane in the bus, but there is no way I would do this! I don't want anything that flamible in the bus (if I remember my chemistry correctly, propane is heavier than air and thus settles to the bottom of the bus). Boats that have it mounted in a closed area are required to have it vented, etc. Not to mention I don't want to give up any more space.
I was thinking about mounting it just aft of the Westy factory tank. Of course I doubt I would need that much propane, but it would be cool since I've already got the tank.
I also thought about buying one of those small portable tanks- say one of the small squatty 5 gallon tanks, and having a quick connect plumbed in- line. _________________ '78 Westy

| Our factory tank is gone, we just carry a med. propane tank inside with us. It sits outside attached to a connector on the orig hose to the stove when we're camped. Jeremy |

jeremysmithatshawdotca-
Do you have any pics of your setup? Where did you get a small tank? Is it like a bbq grill type of tanks? |

Is it legal to mail those tanks in the mail sense they may have propane in them? Because I have one that I will not be using. Just not sure if you can mail that bad boy.
I live in League City, Tx right outside of Houston. How much would you be willing to pay for one?

My tank came off a 78 rivera camper style bus. It looks just like the westy tanks and mounts in the same place as a westy tank. |

Shipping it UPS would most likely be the cheapest way; if it's completely empty then there isn't anything to worry about. Leave the valve in the open position so it can not become pressurized.
You can buy several different sizes of propane tank including a squatty little 2.5 or 5 gallon up to several hundred gallon. I've seen the 5 gallon tanks at Northern Tool and Supply (I want to say it was around $20). _________________ '78 Westy

Hey I sent you a e-mail back, I was just joking about the price thing. You can have it. A guy from here once hooked me up on some 911 wheel studs that would have cost me $90 bucks easily and the least I could do is pay it forward like the movie. Thank god for a web site like this one!!!! Everett you rock man

Thanks!!!! That is so cool of you. This place rocks, and you rock- rock on!!!
On a side note- I wanted to mention how great the vw bus community is. I've been part of it since May, and have received nothing but good vibes from everyone. People hooking each other up with gear, info, and friendship- how f*cking cool is that in this day and age?!!! |

| The tank we use is just a little one, maybe 2.5 gallon, like you might get with a little bbq. The hose sticks out of the bottom of the van a bit, we just take the protector cap off, and screw on the hose. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow for you guys. Jeremy |

There must be a reason UPS/mail doesn't ship propane tanks? Hmmm...maybe cause they can blow the sh*t out of an airplane at 40,000 feet or a truck that crashes? Hazardous cargo, even when empty. The tank might seem empty at sea level, but get it into a plane pressurized to 10,000 feet and it again is pressurized. Or a fire...tank get hot, tank go boom. Please don't mail it. IF YOU DO; HAVE IT PURGED AND FILLED WITH NITROGEN. |

Take the regulator off the tank, stick an air nozzle in it for a second to blow any residual propane out, and ship the damn thing as car parts. It's not a closed system after taking the regulator off and therefore it can't change pressures. Besides, if it's an original tank, the regulator is probably long due to be replaced anyways as the rubber seals inside them go bad over time- a new regulator runs about $35. _________________ '78 Westy

I have a 78 Transporter that has a propane tank mounted under the sliding door.
Just wondering if this was stock or an upgraded feature.
Sorry the tank isn't for sale. _________________ I learn so much in here, sometimes it makes my head hurt.

Bravhefen- is your bus a camper or former camper? The Westfalia deluxes with stoves had propane tanks, the other camper companies I can't vouch for. On the Westy's the tank was mounted under the sliding door and had a rubber gas line that ran under the bus to the driver's side and screwed into a fitting that goes through the floor and then another line attaches between the coupler and the stove. _________________ '78 Westy
