Hello,
I was wondering what are the differences between the late euro 1200cc engines when compared to the earlier versions. I have read that they use normal 1600 cases but what about everything else? Were the cranks different, the heads?
I noticed that the later 40hp pistons are being sold now by AA, I have alot of 40hp parts but no case, it gets me thinking... |

You can build a 40hp out of any case, even an AS41 with 8mm studs, dual relief, 200mm flywheel, dog house etc.
In the end it's most importantly the heads and intake manifold that make it a 40hp. Those are the two critical parts not being sold new or reproduced. _________________ -Bruce

I didn't realize that AA had started making the 1200 cylinders for the 1970-78 style German 1200. In the past I had seen them for sale in the UK at VW Heritage but at one point they sold out.
In the past, I've heard the Formula Vee racers use the late cases with the 1960s style 1200 cylinders, and would "fill the gap" at the base, so to speak, with a Viton O-ring. Now I'm sure that's all fine for an engine that runs a handful of races then gets torn down again without many heating/cooling cycles. I was less enthusiastic about that option on an engine that gets used as a driver in various kinds of service over many years. But with "proper" late-style cylinders available, that's a great option if you're wanting it to be the stock 1192cc and use a newer or new case. That begs the question, did AA run any off in the big-bore version as well?

I remember seeing them on the VW heritage site as well but I didn't give it too much thought with the cost of shipping and all. I live right down the street from the AA location/warehouse, but I have never gone inside, but the savings on shipping will be nice when I do.
I'd definitely be interested in 83mm version but they don't have it listed on their site, it seems like it'd be a good idea but I guess they figure the market is too small and not worth it.
the 77mm euro ones they sell are 20 bucks more then the 40hp big bore set, not too much more for the piece of mind of using a newer case. Plus they have a little discount coupon that pretty much knocks off a little more than the taxes.
Did the euro cars run different 40hp heads, or were they the same as the late 65 they had here in the USA?
I have 2 sets of the 65 style heads, but two of them are flycut to death, I think they measured 33cc, the other set seems uncut but one has two broken fins. I need to start collecting a few more parts to get this going. |

The late 1200s used normal late-65 square boss heads with the 90mm cylinder opening and 34mm intake ports. Even the 1978-85 Mexican made 1200 engines used that style of head as well.
