I'm on the road trying to get a tire mounted on my spare and not having luck. I have a lead on a small tractor shop any other ideas?

I don't understand Linda, are you having trouble locating a tire shop?

Any shop should be able to mount a tire. If they can balance a dually wheel, they can balance a wide 5.

that would only be for balancing the tires because they don't have the big hub to hold the wheel in place, but mounting a tire on a wide five wheel any shop can do.

Around me Walmart can mount and balance a wide 5. I go to a local tire guy though.

I'm back home and Firestone and the other shops in the Brick NJ area (closest area to pick up my soda media and glass media for my wheels) all said they can't mount the 14" stock wheel to their machines in order to mount the new tire. I kind of understand being I used to work in a garage mounting tires for a summer in my 20's.

I have a lead on a tractor shop which they said they may be able to grab the inside of the wheel but the price for mounting will go up it it takes longer to do. Quotes were $20. each if easy and double or more if difficult. So guys lets cut to the chase where can I go that has mounted our stock wheels in my area? I'm near Red Bank, NJ I traveled to south Jersey today and willing to try NY if I don't waste my time and the shop doesn't struggle increasing the bill or damaging the wheel?

Linda just go to any local small tire shop by you, preferibly one that does its work on the sidewalk, they will not trurn you down. sounds to me like these guys you went to don't wanna get their hands dirty.
All tire shops have the machines to grab the rim from the inside lip, how else would they mount tires on wheels? size 14" wheels are not rare at all, in fact they're quite common.

Makes sense to me. And don't worry if they can't balance it, at least if you're on the road and need a spare, that's the least of your worries.. just get it mounted and off you go. No sure how much effect balancing has at lower VW bus speeds anyway, but .. it's nice if it can be done.

I mount my own. It's pretty easy if you mount from the backside so the rim face don't get scratched. Use 2 long mounting bars and it takes about 5 minutes. I use Dynabeads to balance http://www.innovativebalancing.com/index.php

A standard tire machine should have no trouble at all grabbing the inside of the rim.

Foriegn Car Werks is in Bound Brook. 732-805-0907 You must have met Billy by now. He's the one with the CJVWS trailer at all the engilshtown shows. He can get it done. Now I just started working at a different VW dealer, and the tire machine they have is kinda crazy. It's ment to mount tires and not damage alloy wheels. I have not tried a wide 5 on it yet, but it might not be able to handle it.

Thanks guys heading out tomorrow with the wheel again.

I need the spare mounted so I can swap out the others for media blasting and paint. Also nice to have the spare as my insurance/registration should be ready this weekend.

Any shop that says they can't mount a 14" bus rim isn't worth giving your money to. If they say that, they don't have a clue what they are talking about. Run away!

X4. I recently had 2 tires mounted on my F-250 (tires were loose in the bed of the truck). Total job came to $25, including removing and installing on the truck.

Then I took a single loose wheel and tire from my wife's MCS to America's tire and it was like $27 and it wasn't even on the friggin car!

But seriously, almost all tire shops have rim clamp machines so the center hole doesn't matter for mounting. Many shops can't balance wide 5s but you can buy an adaptor for that right here in the classifieds.
