|

Does anyone have any experience with placement of fire extinguisher? I am trying to think of easy places that are not in the way etc... I didn’t find any threads searching. Any Ideas? Thanks. _________________ Long live the VW Buses...

What size do you have? 2&1/2 lb or less?
Ive heard of people putting the extinguisher on the heater pedestal behind the handbrake lever, but it has to mount off to the side. Ive got a 5 pounder sitting loose between the front seats, but if I were to mount it I would put it vertically on the sheetmetal in the walk through section. Some others mount theirs in the back but as far as Im concerned, when there's a fire you want that thing as close to your hands as possible. I dont wanna see smoke out the rearview mirror and have to go whiffling through the rear cabinet to get at it while the bus is burning away.

Hey, it's better than nothing. Although I do suggest you upgrade to something with a bit more hang time.
Ive got a five pounder but that's only because it was free and I didnt have the money for a Halotron. That would be the ultimate extinguisher for our buses. |

i put my small one (not sure of the size) on the passenger side by the floor under the rear seat. It has a velcro attachement so I can just open the slider and just yank it off if need be. It's out of way and looks ok! _________________ Without Love in the Dream It Will Never Come True! |

I have a 2.5lb Kidde ABC Multipurpose Dry Chemical extinguisher. I mounted it behind the drivers seat. Isn't easy access for the kitchen, but if I ever get an engine fire its right by me if I need to jump out and hose it down. I think I may get another smaller one just for the kitchen and mount it near by. That way I can get a much smaller one geared toward grease fires from all the quesadillas Im makin. _________________ 63 Gulf Blue Notch

I got mine set up behind the passengers rear seat mine had one in the place its it...if you do store it, store it horizonatally if its one of those smaller ones besure to shake it up every once in a while if you dont if you suddenly need it nothing will come out (as the stuff on the inside well settle in the bottom so store if possible horizonally if you cant then be sure to shake it...

this is true, but rather than shake it I would tap it on the pavement before use. |

I have mine mounted just in front of the passenger door on door frame. Easy to just reach over and grab it and go.

I once saw a picture of a guy who mounted his on the steering wheel column. It looked shapr and easy to grab. Does anyone remeber seeing that picture in a prior thread? _________________ 1978 Westfalia |

I did what STEP said. Mounted horizontally on the passenger side heater duct up and kind of behind the e brake mechanism. I figured that I'd better have it close to me while I'm driving in case I've got to grab it and go. I didn't want to have to get out, open another door, find the extinguisher and them try to battle the fire. I also mounted my 3 cell Mag Light inbetween the drivers seat and the drivers door on the inner dogleg. I fgured that If I need light at night, I want to be able to grab it from where I'm at. _________________ James

I have 2, including the small one that came mounted to the rear bench seat in deluxe westys, and a larger one in the storage area for the jack, just under the passenger's seat hidden by the rubber cover. It's out of sight, but I know it's there at a moments notice. _________________ Your car may do 0-60 in under 5 seconds, but can it sleep 4 and cook a meal?

I have two 2 1/2 lb extinguishers... They both came with plastic holders w/ easy to remove straps, so I zip tied it to the vent behind the e-brake on the passenger side, where it's still easy for me to grab and easy for the passenger as well... The other one I've kept under the back seat or where my spare should go... i keep that one handy for "repair" days when I'm testing stuff out... _________________ '72 Deluxe Transporter |

being that I was a manager for the building I am in... and the one responsible for the fire inspections for 2 years...
according to the fire mashal where I am... the proper way to maintain a fire extinguisher, is to take it, flip it over once a month and listen for the sand like material to slide from one end to the other... as long as you hear the sliding sand sound... it's good... if you don't... shake it and try again...
if you still don't hear any sliding sand noise... then you are supposed to replace or have it serviced...
Just another view on making sure they are good... _________________ No VW right now.... |

What should I know about putting out an engine fire? Is there some technique or perhaps something to avoid? Problem areas to focus on? I'm a bit paranoid and I don't want to get stuck with an empty extinguisher and a fire still burning. |
If you are uncertain how to use an extinguisher, go to the local fire department, they give courses on their proper use. A first instinct is to open the decklid to get right at the engine, this is not always a good idea since fire can flash out and seriously burn you. Spray into the air intake grilles and underneath the rear of the bus. You shouldnt risk opening the decklid but I would be very tempted to. The handle will be very hot.
I think bigger is better in this case if you are panicky around an engine fire (who isnt). The more hang time your extinguisher has, the more mistakes you can safely make and still have some left over. |

I settled in on this concept of mounting my extinguisher to the back of the steering column of my 70 bus and had to share. After driving the bus for a week with this installed, I realized it never got in my way and is easy to reach if I ever need it.
