My carbs are leaking pretty badly. I checked the diaphragm and that seal is good. What could the issue be? Here are some pictures of the manifold.
Both sides are leaking like this. I am running new fuel line. _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." |

Pictures of both sides of the webers would probably be more helpful in determining why said webers are leaking. |

These are pictures of 1 manifold from both sides. are you wanting both manifolds? _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." |

Vw Guy- I think Ragman means post a picture of the actual carbs. It would be hard to tell where a carb is leaking from without seeing it. |

If you haven't brushed or wiped off the carbs yet, put each on it's respective manifold and use the stain pattern to see if you can pinpoint where the leaks are coming from. If, for example, the leaks are starting at the manifold/carb joint, new gaskets, and possibly the manifolds being resurfaced is the fix. If it's further up on the carbs, get some fuel in the float bows and look around where the stains start.
PS- I just looked at your pics again and I don't think the leaks are at the carb/manifold connection...but spend some time looking at it and you'll figure it out. _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |

Carbs are cleaned already. there was some residue pretty much near every possible screw on the carbs tough. The residue was visible where the linkage plate met the carbs too. I took them apart and the floats just slightly rubbed on the pin, so I cleaned and sanded the pin. I tore down the carbs completely and cleaned every thing. and every passage. _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Maybe you could use some uv dye in the fuel to see where its leaking since you cleaned them already. Its really bright stuff, and easy to detect (I use it for oil leaks). You need a special light though. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/INT0/374C...;ppt=C0050 |

After tearing them down, I found that the main paper seal between the float and main body was dry. I would guess that was the cause of the leak. _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." |

Explain how?
If they were leaking where you state there should be signs of fuel. Your leak is likley elsewhere.
Based on the photos it's likely your float height is incorrect or you have excessive fuel pressure. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

Yes, both the seal and the floats were way off. I adjusted the floats and put in new seals (greased). They are in now and I'm tuning them tonight. We'll see how they do now. _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." |

An easy way to find little leaks (gas, oil, whatever...) is to get some Desitin foot spray. It sprays on and dries quickly to a white powder coating that will wick any moisture from the smallest of leaks and show up readily. When you're done, spray with simple green and wash off. Easy.... K2R Spotlifter works the same way and is available at Ace Hardware usually... |

Not quite useful with Webers since one will get fuel on the outside of them during operation. Doesn't take many miles before the fuel/varnish starts to show on the outside of the carb bodies. The paper gaskets wick quite a bit of fuel during operation. Also with the use of todays blended fuels the fuel crawls up the wall of the fuel bowl quickly. With the carb top off pour in some fuel about halfway and watch how quickly it climbs the wall of the bowl _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc
