Does anyone have any pics of original radios fitted in sambas.
From what I gather the most usual radio fitted in a split beetle was the telefunken IA50 lightning bolt. But from the limited number of vitage pics I've seen that show a radio in a samba it seems the IA52 (pictured below) was the more usual radio for the barndoor?
I guess because it was the newer model and the samba was supposed to be the latest and greatest of all at it's time?
Would love see pictures to see what was used more and with latter BD sambas.

Here is a good link that shows the breakdown of the years:
http://gutefahrt.com/radio/telefunken.html
I dont know the year of that pic in the above post, but i am guessing that it is a 51-52? Early 53 might have had the ID-52, but I am GUESSING that most 53-55 BD sambas came with the ID53 or ID54 cut into a blockoff plate. Most restored barndoors have an owner installed earlier one because they are avaialble and have a cooler look. I have an ID-52 installed in mine, and recently got an IA50. Debating whether to install it, as its way too early for the bus. The factory blockoff pates with the VW emblem are cooler than any radio in my opinion, as they are BD deluxe only, and rarer than any radio. If I didnt already have an antennae on the front of my bus, I would have the original blockoff plate back in the dash.

I think it´s a 1951 - 24A Model (not Samba)...but with full dash (optional item) and a nice radio.

Wow!!
That's quite a collection.
What's the radio top right and forth down far left. Very IA52 like but no push buttons. Never seen that before looks like one has a telefunken badge. |

Telefunken IA52
Although lots of Barndoor Deluxe period pics show an aerial fitted to the front (usually down the middle), period shots of Barndoor Deluxe dashes seem extremely rare
Another IA52?

Could that be the same bus as the one from the brochure?
'51. Steering column looks red? 2 indicator knobs. Cigarette Lighter or Small silver button:? next to start button.
Also note the non-barndoor sunvisor. Another 51 feature? |

also forward opening vent window! very early buses only? wonder why this design was dropped? cab ventilation is an issue on the pre-52 buses
another picture also showing the lower edge cloaking
normal rearward opening vent window. hinge sits further back

the 1951 type24S, 15-window, had no radio when I bought it back '94... so I fitted a home-build radio that had FM .... but in january '95, I visited the old owner in the ex-DDR, and he still had a lot of stuff from the 15, including it's OG radio, a PHILIPS... it should still be in it, I sold it with the radio... These Philips radio's are mounted UNDER the dash, and the PLATE in the dash was in metal and was missing the grill... it had 4 holes to put the grill in it... see this picture:
...in case anyone would like a Philips like this, I think I have 2 more left, but not the plate that goes in the dash....

Nice OG pic of the suicide quarterlights Chris. Been after a decent OG pic for years.
Always assumed the quarterlight would have had to have the overlapping lip missing for the hinge to function correctly. It's clear from the pics no lip has been put on the front (the now opening edge). But can never get a good pic of the hinge section from the outside.
The lip is present on the closing edge of all non-suicide piano-hinge quarters I've seen. |

I am not sure but I think that you are right. The building in front of the bus looks like Wolfsburg factory to me. _________________ Zelensis, glassfibre body made in Belgium , disigned and built on a VW platform About 25 body's built.

probably leaking, even when properly closed. at cruising Speed there's quite some air pressure on the a pillar. also there was no chance for quarter Ventilation in wet conditions.
my Kohlruss had some kind of suicide sliding Windows on the side Panels and they had to fabricate Special wind deflectors on all sliding Windows to get rid of the obviously leaking design too. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

...I posted a video link yesterday in the "barndoor videos" topic... if you look at that link from 04.54 on, you'll see an early Barndoor in action with these windows opened... of course, that was in Africa so not too much leaking Gunter ...it seems this BD also sufferd a lot, but not from rain...
here the link: http://vimeo.com/56278834
...in case you don't know the Bus, it's the one from the 1951 BOOK about an AFRICA trip by D'Ieteren (think the bus is a 1950...) more pictures of it in my own gallery, the last 2 pages, so the oldest I posted...
