Ok folks...I'm replacing my entire exhaust system...not fun getting the old parts off with out breaking any thing. So I've got all the parts lined up. I'm trying to figure out what the big three hole flange gaskets are needed for if I have the doughnuts for the connections. Unless I'm missing something. Amy help would be great, thanks.

I believe the larger gaskets are for use at the cat and muffler flanges.

The picture of the OPs exhaust has redundant gaskets.
If using a donut, just use the donut.
The CAT gets the metal gaskets and tailpipe gets the fiber one. |

To make installation easier, leave the collector to jay pipe connection loose. Tighten up the flat flanges first but not the muffler brackets. The doughnut gasket compensates for misalignment in the pipes. It might also take a few times of adjusting that joint to get it to seal properly. After all the joints are tight and sealed, snug up the muffler brackets. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

2x.
Words of wisdom!
Loosen those muffler straps before attemping to bolt down anything!
I returned to these bolts a couple times over the next 2 or 3 months and found they had loosened as the sytem had been worked a bit.
Took up a little sealing slop by retorquing. But too tight is broken.. So don't get carried away.
I have less exhaust leakage today than in the 10+ yrs I've had this thing!

Hey every one...thanks for the feed back. I always assemble every thing lose and get it all lined up. Make sure that its all there then start tightening things down from the start to the end. I've made that mistake before! and had to undo every thing, what a pain!
UPDATE:
I finished tightening all the connections...and hit them once more to be sure...(there's lots!) called the wife..."lookie lookie see what I did!!"...jumped in and >CLICK!< >CLICK!< >CLICK!< >CLICK!< ...I guess I had the doors open too long! LOL We got a good laugh...then I plugged in the charger and checked back in 10 min...fired right up and its nice and quiet now!
There is nothing like a quiet vanagon with that new exhaust smell! LOL
This van has had so many little holes for so long...I forgot what quiet van REALLY SOUNDED LIKE! _________________ Michael
