Been working with a manufacturer on designing an insulation "jacket" for the pop-top canvas that will fit late bay Westy's. Though, while I've never measured early bay Westy's, or Vanagon Westy's I'd imagine theyre not too far off...
The material is similar to Reflectix, but is lined on both sides to keep it water impervious as well it is hemmed around all the edges with a banding. Each panel is sewn to the adjacent panel and on the back, strap webbing with plastic buckles to keep the insulation tight to the canvas.
This idea came about as I regularly need both bunks in my bus to accomodate everyone. I got the idea last year, while camping in Salem and man, it got cold...
When it arrives, we'll see how it does! _________________ Mike

I'm pretty sure a snow jacket was made as an option in Europe. They may still be available. I have seen them in te past couple months. May be worth a search as you could save some coin if you don't have to reinvent the wheel. _________________ Special Thanks to:

I had heard about something to that end. I tried searching, and couldnt find anything. This was a pretty simple "reinvent" it was just a matter of getting accurate measurements. The most difficult part this far has been figuring out the best way to secure it at the back; and the original idea was to put them on the inside, but without modifying the interior of the bus (which I dont want to do) the best way to attach it is like a jacket, as you've mentioned. _________________ Mike

Sorry to be a pedant about this but I have to point out that your measurements don't make sense there.
You have the long diagonal at 99" but also the horizontal at 99"
according to my trigonometry that's impossible. the diagonal should be 103.7"
SQRT(99^2 + (43-12)^2) = 103.7
Or rather the two long verticals at the "front" should be slanted out, towards the rear. _________________ '73 transporter, Riviera Top, Later westy interior.

Your geometry doesnt account for the rearward angle at the top of the front canvas. I second guessed myself as well, and measured again 2 and 3 times. But then realized when looking at the side of the bus, with the roof popped that the canvas leans backwards at the front, and forwards at the back. Making the top "opening" of the canvas a bit smaller than the bottom of the "opening" in the canvas.
Nice to see someone else appreciates trig though! _________________ Mike

Yup, just noticed that
should have figured that the top is the same length as the bottom _________________ '73 transporter, Riviera Top, Later westy interior. |

Mook, I'm glad I'm not the only one who was like WTH?! I was out there measuring for half an hour, did top and bottom multiple times because for the life of me my schooling was telling me this "isnt possible" then, after getting help to measure it once more, so that I COULD'NT mess it up, it occurred to me.
Thanks for justifying my anguish! _________________ Mike

I think they were in the process of making a bus version. There is a thread out there somewhere with more detail. It's more of a rain fly, so I'm not sure it would do much to keep the cold out.
I like the idea of an insulated wrap, but I grew up tent camping with my family and in scouts, so even a cold Westy is pretty luxurious to me. _________________ 1976 Westy

A preliminary hunt on vwheritage and justkampers didnt reveal much. Though, I am at work and didnt really invest much effort.
But for the 100.00 - it costs me, I dont think I could buy, and ship one here from the UK.

I've seen this too, and spoke to GW last year about one, but you are correct. This is more of a rip-stop material, rain fly. Its not an insulator. _________________ Mike

These were made by Westfalia for the Paris-Dakar Race VW Westy support vehicles. I had only seen pictures of a couple of these over seas until I managed to find one. Definitely rarest of the rare. When I finally get my Bus back I will post some pics. |

I have the Wasser Stopper for use on my 79. Works great for keeping the rain out. There is a pic from my album here on Samba. Even though Go Westy says its for Vanagon, fit fine on our Late Bay. Keeps the Bay nice and dry, helps a tad on warmth. Maybe with it and the insulation would make a big difference. We only camp all year up until first part of November here, then he is put away into storage till spring. So no need for insulation for us.. _________________ 1979 Westfalia Deluxe http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=474334&highlight=iowa |
