I need to get one & was wondering what kind/size do you have & where/how did you mount it in your 356?

After searching different threads it seems that Halotron is the way to go. 2.5 or 5 pound?

I bought the 2.5 lb extinguisher. It's just sitting behind the seats right now.

Halotron 2.5lb is all you need.

Don't open the lid, instead spray it through the vents.

This is the best piece of advice I've heard for a while, opening the decklid will allow more oxygen into the fire, spray through the vents

If the extinguisher is not secured in some fashion there is a risk (slight?) of it becoming airborne and thus a missile in the event of a crash. There were some threads on the Registry forum about means of installing an extinguisher along with opinions on the best location quite some time ago - searchable if you're interested.

I fashioned a rather crude method of securing it to the steering column using the Halotron "quick release" mounting that is in the photo in this thread and a couple of hose clamps protected with some old fat tire bicycle tubes. It doesn't rattle, cannot be hit by my knees or legs and can be dropped from its holder into the hands of the driver instantly in the event I need it. I think that there were photos of "more artful" installations on the other forum. There would HAVE to be more elegant solutions than mine.

I have a small Halotron extinguisher from Aircraft Spruce, secured similar to what Bill describes. Secure and easy to access quickly.

Don't buy a dry powder extinguisher for your car: if you ever have to use it the mess it will make is terrible, I am told.

Could you please post a photo or two of your installations?

Like Barry and Bill I also have a Halon 2.5 lb Fire Extinguisher mounted on the steering column. Simple installation. I took a piece of a inter tube secured it to the steering column and using the "quick release" mounting I secured it to the column with a couple of hose clamps. Its easy to get to in an emergency.

I can't seem to upload the photo. Its in the gallery.

As I have stated previously on this topic on that 'other' site :

A. Mount the extinguisher in a readily accessible spot. My preference is
either between the seats on the shift linkage cover or under the dash
on the passenger side. Mounting it on the steering column provides
the chance that the release clip could be inadvertently released, dropping
the extinguisher into the drivers footwell, a remote but very dangerous
scenario.
B. Always spray through the deck vents, do not open the lid as it wastes
time and provides more oxygen to the fire.
C. Never leave the extinguisher (or any other heavy object) loose in the
interior as it can become a missile in the event of sudden change in the
vehicle's velocity.

Porsche number 1 has it mounted where I mount mine. If it's good enough
for # 1, it's good enough for me... Wink

Pat: I'm submitting a couple of photos. Joel's photos (and for that matter his car) are better than mine. Alex's extinguisher appears to be mounted toward the passenger side of the column. Mine is right on (bottom side of it that is) the column. Joel's remarks about an inadvertent release of the extinguisher are cogent and I have seen them before but I decided I am very unlikely to somehow pull the release so I opted for the extinguisher being closer.

By the way, Joel, would you mind elaborating on what you made/did to match the #1 mounting? You might change my mind, although my wife would prefer that if the extinguisher is knocked loose by one of us that it fall on my foot on "my" side of the car (which, under California law, she reminds me, IS community property). Very Happy

This pic is taken fairly close to peering directly down the column while still permitting a view of the extinguisher. Yes, the car is a survivor.

This view is from the driver's door opening. Yes the triple gauge is incorrect. Shudder. Wink

I carry a 1 1/4 pound Halotron extinguisher in the glove box of the woodie with a ten pound just behind the driver seat. Wood burns more readily and I don't wish the termites to be unduly alarmed

Thanks for the photos Bill, Joel and Ev. I would worry me a bit having that hunk of steel near my knees if I ever hit anything. I like the idea of keeping the extinguisher on the right side or maybe on the tunnel.

I would like to find one small enough to fit in the glove box. They used to make one that size, but haven't seen one in a long time. Meanwhile I have the larger extinguisher in my garage where it won't do much good!

Yup. I do worry, a little, about my knees and you're correct, Pat, for bringing that up. My excuse is that on the right side it will be my wife's knees. Guess who wins that one.

When you have time Joel, some installation instructions for your "right side" installation would be appreciated - who knows, Rosemary may some day come to her senses and throw me and the car out. I hope not though my knees might be in less danger. I can't jump and never could anyway. Very Happy

Bill,
Installation is not for the purist, but is reversible.

A. With extinguisher in mount, locate for best access and fairly central
mounting on the glove box base, further back for more concealment
if you wish.
B. Mark bracket location with chalk
C. Remove extinguisher, place bracket inside marks and locate the mounting
holes.
D. Punch holes with an awl or phillips screwdriver with diameter to match
mounting bolts.
E. Using round head bolts from below, locate the bracket.
F. Place large fender washers over bolts inside glove box.
G. Use nylock nuts to tighten bolts. Bolt length should not extend beyond
rounded head of nylock nut.

Simple but effective and easily repaired or replaced. If your original
box is sacrosanct, buy a repop and store the oldie.

I mounted my FE bracket on the rear shift linkage cover, Easily accessible and the holes can be covered by the carpet if the bracket is removed. Not applicable to earlier cars with rounded access covers. I have since replaced carpet with German Square Weave.

Does the 'Halotron' have to be flipped over like the powder ones to keep it fresh?

Not as far as I know. Halotron is a gas. See http://www.halotron.com/technical_info.php

Gentlemen:

If I may be so bold: I would like to see more discussion about which type of extinguisher is best in this application.

If I remember correctly (and I'll take no bets on that), some of the dry powder types are very corrosive to aluminum alloys.

And isn't it the case that Halon is no longer Socially Acceptable?

Anyone care to help?

From what I have read you are correct on both points. However the consensus has been to use halotron which is a replacement for halon. It is supposed to be less harmful.
