I took the shifter apart, marked the parts before hand, to clean it up. However, now the shifting is ALL screwed up.

Question: does the housing have to be positioned properly for it all work?? I mean do the shifter rod "ears" rest on the side plates or go under them ???

Stuart, yes the base of the shift lever position does make a difference in shifting. That is why the bolt holes are slotted in the plate. Did you remove only the shifter base?

Work with shifting into 3rd and 4th gear. When adjusted properly, no side movement should be required to get into 3rd or 4th. Should be just a fore and aft movement. You can try moving the base around and see if that helps. If not, you will need to crawl under the rear of the van by the transmission and make an adjustment at the shift rod clamp. The Bentley manual covers how to adjust the shift lever and there have been a lot of threads about this type of problem. Good luck.

Shifter box alignment is covered in the Bentley.

Personally, I start my rebuilds with the box mounted in the center of each mounting hole.

Like mentioned above the baseline set up is in Bentley then
you fine tune from there. I make sure everything is free,
greased, and movable. Then using the Bentley specs set it up.
From there just little tweaks at the shifter base and occasionally
a spline needs to be turned on the rods underneath. It's not
hard but you need to start from that basic set up in the Bentley.

Okay, I'm an idiot !

I took the shifter apart for cleaning & on re-assembly, put the stupid reverse lock-out spring at the bottom of the shift handle rod instead at the top! Instead of pushing down for reverse, I had to pull up !!

At least my clutch job turned out perfect...and the coolant hose replacement. Now onto gas tank re-seal (leaking at top) && injector hoses, etc.

Thanks for your help!
