Hi there,

Don't know much about the drivetrain yet. When I coast up to stop signs I can feel the right rear dragging me to a stop. I hear something clunking at high speeds. I also feel I'm getting crap fuel economy but I haven't owned the van long and have no idea what I should be getting.

I'm beginning to think it's either my brake or my axle.

I have noticed that when I'm rolling backwards and apply the brake it locks up bad.

I know this sounds more and more like the drum brake. I was wondering what half shaft would fit if I had to buy a used one.

Best to jack up the rear of the bus and spin the wheels-listen or feel for brake drag. CV/half shaft would clunk when you do tight turns but be sure to check them while it's in the air. Rebuild the CV's is considered better than replacing in most cases

Even better to take off the drum and have a look inside, locking up in reverse could mean it's horribly out of adjustment, worn badly or a shoe lining has separated, all dangerous things that should be looked at right now.
Get the brakes under control and see if the sound goes away.

Your symptoms sound a whole lot like a failure in the pinion shaft bearings of the transaxle. When you have power applied going forward the pinion is forced away from the ring gear and stays in position, but when decelerating or backing up the pinion is pulled towards the ring gear and jambs.

Hope it is something cheaper and easier to fix though.
