Looking for some help and advice re-keying my tailgate lock. I have removed the lock and the barell and the wafers. With no wafers my keys slips in all the way. What am I trying to achieve? Do I fit the wafers one at a time using trial and error until I can insert the keys without any wafers protruding? I have 8 wafers in total, does a VW lock of this age always use 8 wafers?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Also to what extent should I clean the barell and the wafers, there is alot of gunk and crap that has fallen out, but should I soak the barell? I am guessing a certain amount of grease is required for good operation?

You can only use the wafers that you can make work, if you can make 5 out of 8 wafers work then you can just do that.

WD40 does a good enough job of cleaning. As for relubricating the lock that would depends somewhat on where you live. Maybe check with your local locksmiths and see what they like.
