does anyone know if the empi guiet pack for the split bus changed over the years, the reason i ask is that i have been using a single quiet pack system on my bus for 13 years and I just just purchased a new header from jbugs since my old one had a rust hole in it.
the new header isn't the same as the one i purchased 13 years ago, they look the same but the new one makes my muffler hit the bumper, after looking at pictures of the new quiet pack empi muffler system the muffler inlet and outlet look to have been swapped....so I am going have to get the new muffler aswell.

just wanting to see if anyone has had the same issue.

Not unusual! Why not just take it down to a local muffler shop and have them break the weld on the flange and reweld in a position that will not hit the bumper?

I have a welder and I can say that looking at the new header with my old empi muffler that just re-welding the flange in another position will make the muffler sit at such a bad angle there is no way i would drive around like that.

Bug vs. Bus muffler. The flange is angled differently.

The shop that installed my engine 13 years ago sold empi and they installed the empi quiet pack on my bus and it fit perfect, I just installed my new engine and replaced my old empi header with a new one for the 67 bus and went to install the original muffler that fit perfect before now hit the bumper so bad that I can even get a bolt in the flang, they must have changed the system up over the years,
I ordered the new muffler just today to replace my old one and jbugs say that it will fit so we will find out but from the look of the muffler part number empi 3666 has the inlet tube welded in a diff location than my old one.

Yeah, now that you mention just swapping the header, I recall the angle difference could be on the header itself. There is definitely two applications. An exhaust for bugs and one for busses. Still have the old header?

yes i still have the old header and by looking at it they look the same,
the old muffler hits on the inner lip of the bumper and so i am forced now to buy the new muffler since they will not except the header back as a return because iv'e installed it on the engine.

Is the header flange at 1 o'clock. Just had the same issue. Bought new headers and the flange was at 1 o'clock so I had to buy a new muffler also. I had already bolted the headers on so could not return either.

yep 1 o'clock on the new header just like my old empi muffler, I guess empi headers dont last long from what i've read but mine lasted 13 years, I just coated mine with high temp paint every now and then.
one day I would like to put a better exhaust system on the bus with a nice turbo muffler setup or something like that,

if anyone out there still running an older empi quiet pack they may have the same problem as I am having.

so I received the quiet pak muffler today and tried it on the empi header that was supposed to fit the bus and the same issue , the header is not bent right and i can only guess that the collector on the end wasn't welded in the correct orientation, so I will be sending the empi muffler and header back and get the empi gt single tip muffler instead.

I swear that I must be the 2% of ppl that always get the crap item that doesn't work right or fit right!!!!!!!!!!! so now i will be another week without the bus running, oh and the place i bought the empi header for the 67 bus called empi and they said that they sell many of these and i am just shit out of luck and there must be something else wrong with my system...
but i will tell you that my bus has never been hit and the bumper is in its corrrect spot and the muffler will not fit without hitting the bumper totally cant even get 1 bolt in the flange.

i will get a tri mil later on , does anyone know if they have one for a 67 bus.

Jeff,

Another example of empi junk. My previous comment about bus vs bug headers stands. Trying to mate a bug pack muffler to an empi header was an optimistic approach.

I think you may have better luck with an all bug pack system, but even those are not great. The unfortunate thing is a decent exhaust costs a bit more money. I think it's worth it in the long run, for less hassle.

Don't get me wrong, I ran bug pack for years. Served me fine.. currently running a Thunderbird ceramic Quiet pack. No rust, and not (yet) blown out. It just seemed when I had my bus as my DD I was buying a new header yearly. I thought that's all there was . This was pre-samba.

I had the exact same empi bus header empi bus single pak experience 5 years ago. muffler hit the bumper. had a buddy cut and turn it. I sold it a while back and bought a stainless system for vintage speed. VS fits perfect. Empi bus mufflers suck!

Save you pennies and get a Vintage Speed. I wrestled with the Empi single and finally caved and got the VS.... No regrets. Best $ spent in my opinion.
