Got home late last night from the Port of Tacoma after picking up our "Last" van.
It drives almost like new! So incredibly stock. I'll be taking other photos to share as time goes by. Have got to do a couple things to get ready for the Provincial inspection. (rear side markers and DRLs)
Had one small hiccup on the way home. After driving for hours, from Tacoma over Snoqulimie Pass and out onto the flats of Eastern Washington it sputtered, bucked and died as I pulled over. Got out and did a complete check under and around the engine. Restarted just fine. Drove all the many miles home with no other trouble or weakness. Vanagon Syndrome? I've never had a van with the Syndrome so not sure.
Obviously I'll be changing the fuel lines and all other basic maintenance in the very near future.
We bought this thing to drive. It will only be used for camp trips, but it's not going to just sit and be admired. This beast is meant for adventure!
Sadly this means I'll have to sell my other Syncros to help pay for this one.

That van is outstanding. Don't know how Paul managed to let it go. He must be insane.

Nice Jungle Book motif with the decals there. Is that an original spare tire carrier?
Very nice indeed.

It's a corker. The 80-90 thread on it's here, if anybody's interested... http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=99292

Very tasty! We often adventure in BC in the Nelson - Banff - Okanogan - Penticton areas, so you should post your home town if you want worshipers stopping by.

High tops ROCK!

I still think of taking a generic window van and adding a high top,

but factory is better me thinks.

Although I have seen a few sets of horror pictures of rust out in the roof from the way Westfalia bonded them.

Still an awesome van...

They are hard (expensive?) to get legal in the US.

Thanks everyone! As you might expect we are really excited.
It was hard keeping my mouth shut while we waited for the van to get here, didn't want to jinx ourselves and have the boat sink Laughing

For those who don't know this is one of only six or so 16" Syncros that got built into Joker Hightop campers. Most 16"'s were sold to the Army or Ambulance services in Europe.
This thing is completely original, factory Westy. The tire carrier is stock, it is fairly rare as they were very expensive. The awning is Westy factory option from Fiamma. Also a factory tow hitch.
The couple who ordered this wanted an expedition vehicle. No power steering, power windows/locks/mirrors, cruise control or AC.
It does have the factory option ISRI seats, much nicer than what we got here in North America.
It has a grey water tank and an extra gas night heater. And it has the 112 hp DJ engine which pulls really well. Premium gas only though.
And front and rear diff locks.
All rear windows are double glaze plexiglass and the hightop is insulated.
It's fairly quiet and drives pretty good for how tall it is.

We had no trouble getting it into Canada. We had it shipped from Southhampton England to Port of Tacoma WA. and got a three day trip permit to drive through Washington. Taxes at the boarder were bad Evil or Very Mad

All in all not a bad experience, just expensive. I'll be posting many more photos of all the neat bits soon.

Very nice! I'm a little jealous, that is a beauty. It's nice to see it come to BC, maybe our paths will cross one day and I can see it in person. Can't wait to see more pics of it and your travels.

If you think the rot under a Westy hightop's bad, you ought to see what's under some of the aftermarket conversions... Trouble is that the sealant always cracks with age which means, together with condensation or leaking roof windows, water gets in and can't get out.

Knowing how this van has been treated I doubt there's any rust under that roof. Apparently the garage it was kept in was nicer than my house Sad

MsTaboo is a lucky,lucky WOMAN!

I followed the progress of that van and even made an offer
but it was declined as there was better offers on the table.
I don't feel bad now knowing what a great home it ended
up in.
