I picked up this K manifold at Hessisch and only recently noticed the carb flange after I took the carb off that was attached to it (to get the float out of it to use in the '49 ... but that is another story for later...). At first I thought that some previous owner had modified it, but then I noticed that the inside of the cutouts are not round like a drilled hole. They are pretty square. Makes me wonder if VW ever supplied intakes like this? Not sure what the advantage would be/why some one would do this? Has anyone seen this before?

The intake does have the gas welded flanges and very crude KDF logo under each head endcasting, so it is pretty early. No other signs of modification and the heat riser is still very solid, so I doubt it saw a ton of use....

i saw this made here a lot of times. the cut flanges , even with a angle grinder were made to accept different types of carburetors with bigger distance between the studs. the holes were maybe round and the "hotrodder" got carried away filling metal.

Oh that makes sense, I was no thinking about other, non-VW carbs. And if this was "factory" the cuts would be cleaner I'm sure. I think I am going to try and MIG fill these and re-drill it....

Nothing that a night in the shop with a MIG welder and some files can't fix!
