Me and my son are planning a trip in the next couple weekends to visit Charleston to see the sights. Any good camping or Samba member's yard to camp in nearby? We are planning to stay 2 nights. Thanks!!

I've heard a good review/reference for camping on James Island near the city from a dear friend.

Francis Marion National Forest north of Charleston. Free. Then take the ferry out to Bull Island. A beautiful barrier island. Just north of Mt. Pleasant. Head into Charleston for the evening and dinner.

James Island is good, usually space but it can get crowded. My suggestion, call edisto beach state park and see if they have availability. It's right on the beach with a good breeze and way less crowded in terms of spaces. Booking is usually a year in advance but people cancel. It's about 45mins south of Charleston but well worth the drive.

We were there February a year ago. Two thumbs up.

If you have time to visit Beaufort, SC, try Hunting Island State Park: http://www.huntingisland.com/

On the way north, try Huntingdon Beach State Park near Murrells Inlet (N. of Myrtle Beach): http://www.huntingtonbeachstatepark.com/
BTDT, too.

Edisto is great, Huntington beach is expensive. A couple years ago my family took a trip in January down the outer banks in a sunroof diesel, it was 75 degrees. nice for us northerners. we were all alone on the outerbnks, camping was free since the DNR was all closed up for the year. We ran into one other none local who was looking for a comet show. Huntington beach advertised 16 dollars for a night on the website, but after fees it's more like 40 bucks. Why would they lie???? we stayed one night and I told em I had a tent so we could camp right on the beach. no RV's on beach! I put up a poncho as a tent.... whatever they want.

We ran into another vanagon, and he told us of the full moon bus clubs gtg on Edisto beach, wow what a difference. Edisto was great, relaxed, and beautiful. FMBC is awesome too.

I dunno what happened - Huntington Beach was straight up with us.

FWIW, we traveled from the Philadelphia area to Key West and back, deliberately staying on either US 17 or 1 or A1A as much as possible. The state parks were consistently at least very good and several were excellent for facilities and location. OTOH, we stayed at 3-4 private camp grounds and they were uniformly crowded and generally didn't offer as much value for money. The Jekyll Island campground stands out as "not enough room to even change your mind". I don't want to talk about the KOA we stopped at. Nice people at the check-in but after that... [/shudder]

I don't have a problem, per se, with Edisto - I've heard good things about it. And it's in the Low Country, which is "must see" country. IIRC, there a number of Westy trips there in the course of the year.
