I picked up a new project this weekend and cant wait to get it on the road. The previous owner told me it came from Texas, but I am wondering if it was used in the states as an ambulance. I have looked through 12 pages of ambulance forum conversations on my bus with no luck. I am wondering if anyone knows about this bus. It also has some writing in the headlight bucket I am trying to decipher.

I like the bus, I thought about it myself.
In the bucket is typically your paint codes.
Top line, I am not sure
Bottom line is "Elfenbein". German for Ivory. L62. |

The top line looks like "hell" as in hellrot. That would make sense if its an ambulance. Cool bus. _________________ Independent German Auto

Thanks for the info on the paint colors. I am wondering where the bright red was placed. Maybe just paint logos? _________________ Think big drive a bus...

hell elfenbein means light ivory. That is ambulance color
hellrot means light red. your bus is not hell rot. it is hell elfenbein.
You could write off for the birth certificate and that would tell you what port it was sent to when new, if it was a US sold bus or not. It does have blinkers, so it is not euro spec.
I think there is a thread on headlight bucket writing. ? |

very cool, the only problem i foresee is that you are going to bang your head on the ambulance divider when you hack in a walkhtrough and the sunroof...
but it would be the only 22 window bus.... _________________ regards

Congrats! I was very close to buying it, but hesitate a bit too long. Very nice toy! _________________ _______________________

First thing is to get the lights and siren put back on it. Of course making it move forward is high on the list. _________________ Think big drive a bus...

Its been a few months since I last posted. Last week the local CHP classified my ambulance as a not commercial ambulance. On the pink say 1958 "AMB" Transporter. I don't know how that makes it special, but the Highway Patrol was excited to see it. I didn't know if they wanted to give me a ticket because of how it looked or they were just amazed that Volkswagen made a Ambulance. They were just bus fanatics looking for a 21 window. I must say the stock suspension in an ambulance is like no other. It floats like a Cadillac with its special torsion bars. New brakes, new wiring harness, and 1600dp get me a top speed of 53MPH on the highway.
The first question I always get is "I wonder how many people died in that thing."

| I didn't know that ambulances had a softer suspension setup. I learn something new on The Samba almost every day! Good luck with your project. |
