Hi all, I was installing a new throughout bearing and clutch shaft tonight. For some reason I grabbed the input shaft and was able to nearly pull the entire shaft out with very little effort. I've been working on this car for nearly two years now, seems odd I never noticed this. Something about this seems wrong here...

I'm guessing after doing a little research on samba that the input shaft has unscrewed from the other half of the shaft? I've been restoring the vehicle and never heard it run or saw it drive. I'm wrapping up an engine build and was getting ready to install it, looks like I better hold off. Any input on what I need to do here? I have a feeling its going to involve getting familiar with the transmission's innards....

Thanks!

How much can you pull it out?

The input shaft is in two pieces.
The joint between the two is in the differential housing.
During assembly, they are screwed together loosely by a small locating stud in the end of each shaft, then a splined collar/sleeve is slid over the union locking them together as one shaft, and then a snap rings locks the collar from sliding back off. It is normal to be able to wiggle the shaft up and down, but not in and out. Collar is #12 here...

If you can "pull" it out by anymore than say 1mm, there is some sort of problem with that connection. Access to the shaft, stud, collar and snap ring are all inside the diff housing, so you don't need to disassemble the "trans" per say, but you would need to remove the right axle tube and side cover.

I can pull it out several inches, it's definately more than just a wiggle. It feels like full separation from something. I'll remove the right axle and cover this weekend to inspect and repair. I suspected this was the culprit, I just wanted to confirm before going to town on removing parts....

Thank you for the information.

You have a problem...
It is normal for it to wobble around a little, but shoudnt pull out or push in..

I guess this is the fun part of buying unfinished projects from previous owners! I'll open it up this weekend to investigate this weekend.

Let's hope it's just the 7mm stud and not a snaping on the mainshaft that came off.
Is this a Daily driver?

You can buy a beefier stud from www.longenterprises.com
They how have a shoulder on them.

I haven't driven the car, I bought it two years ago, it was in a bunch of pieces in a buddy's garage. The engine and transaxle were still together on the pan, but I never heard it run or drove it. Before I bought it, it had been sitting for a long time, so who knows what had been done to it during that time. It looks like the last time it was licensed was mid 90's (found some plates in the boxes).
