NOTE: this seems to be the place to post this thread; if not, feel free move it to a more appropriate forum...

I have no personal knowledge of the provenance of the VWs discussed, other than what I learned during this visit...likewise, I do not know how "original" the vehicles questioned are; it is likely that there is a mix of original pre-53 and later period restoration / reproduction work present...that said, I think it may interest some people here

I took a ride with my uncle last year to Eastern Coach Restoration, which has long been located on the former premises of the historic Long Island Motor Works...although I grew up with knowledge of both operations, for now I will just post a few period advertisements for historical context...

the purpose of the the trip was twofold; to photograph the buildings and to photograph several of the vintage automobiles currently being worked on...

the person who runs the place also maintains a very large vintage fleet owned by a private collector...the collection is housed out east in an airplane hanger; when necessary, vehicles are serviced (mechanical and bodywork) at the LIMW location

I will post as much information as I know...this will be fairly incomplete, and most likely contain errors...each vehicle has a short catalog description, which I have scanned; it is possible that these descriptions came with the vehicles whenever they were acquired by the private collector...regardless of the accuracy of the information, all of these vehicles are fairly impressive...they also represent only a percentage of similar vehicles in the collection out east

first up is a 1947 beetle...low-light created some focusing issues

I think these vehicles came from a european collection...

on to the next...a Kublewagen KdF 82; the corresponding catalog description gives an idea of what is original and what came from other vehicles and so forth...very cool, regardless

I have no idea if this is correct, but an internet search reveals the following:

CHASSIS AND ENGINE NUMBERS AND DATE OF MANUFACTURE

MONTH CHASSIS

JAN 1940 1 1
DEC 1940 1000
DEC 1941 5656
DEC 1942 14383
DEC 1943 32302
DEC 1944 51999
DEC 1945 53814

reading the catalog description, it appears that this vehicle has chassis number 25925, which would date it to 1943? the engine is post-war...

wow very nice pics, keep posting, is great to see this cars and how they look, the 1947 seems imported from France.

My friend is possible to see a better picture from the engine 1947 low pulley? Seems that pulley is the one "no holes" on it. Better picture could clarify my issues.

Thanks for posting. Regards
Frank

The 47 and the four wheel drive Kübel as well at the other were all sold at the Hermann Historica Auction last in 2011 see
http://www.hermann-historica.de/gb/index_abgeschlossen_N.html
see Auction 61. The 47 appears very original, the four wheel drive Kübelwagen is a non-original reconstruction. The two wheel drive Kübel seems to have a post war engine.

Also a correction to the VW VINs above:

1944 VW production ends at 47781

1945 starts at 47782 and the last war time number on 10 April 1945 is 51995 (last prodcution day before US occupation of Volkswagenwerk). The last number for 1945 is 53814 (already in British control).

The prefix 2 would be for a Kübelwagen and prefix 1 for a Beetle.

For some unknown reason VW chassis numbers are incorrectly listed in many books and also on thesamba under Technical. Usually the number 52000 is given as the first number for 1945 although it is actually (about) the first number for the 1945 POST WAR production.

the buildings unfortunately are going to be torn down at some point in the future...the owner of eastern coach restoration, steve sessions, is approaching retirement and not in the best health

the 47 I think the front hood handle is the L handle, and all that trims i am not sure if is ok, I think the car it was drilled to add this trims, also the glovebox trims, but overall the car is great...but 40k Shocked prety much for this price I would prefer the 52 split vert Wink

for hi-res full-size images, including the '47 pulley, follow this link:

http://dubstar.smugmug.com/Other/Long-Island-Motor-Works-22212/21592175_kFXB66

there was some concern expressed regarding the amount of time this tread could take to load for some users, so I will only post small images for the following two vehicles...these are not VWs, but I think it is appropriate to post them, as they are part of the story, and I think people find them interesting, given the response this thread has received so far
