|
|
So... I picked up these 90.5 forged mahles with the impression they were in "good" condition...
I'm wanting to build a mild turbo, also got a hold of a used forged CW 69mm crank.
What do you think of these? Was this a bum deal, or are they worthy of running? Cylinders have been honed, told they were round...
Thanks guys
Ted

Looking at the pictures, the cylinders werent honed unless you did them later. A valve guide appears to have let go from the multiple valve hits a valve head put on the piston top or something round hit the piston top on one. Something, guide material or a ring disintegrated and ruined the side top of the piston pictured. I wouldnt be surprised if low level oil and or extreme heat conditions were part of the culprit. The cylinder pictured has deep gouges that no honed job will fix. Its a bum deal. Go out and buy 150$ AA 90.5 set of p/c's and dont look back. P/C's are one of the cheapest parts to replace with new of the whole engine. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD

I have had a few pistons that looked like that, and considered using them.
The ring lands take a beating when junk like that gets caught and ground into the cylinder. The rings might be tight, on top of the "obvious" problems. |

Measure skirts. Dial bore gauge cylinders. Check ring grooves. Then we decide. If he just flex honed the cylinders that doesn't really DO much. |

yeah, probably, but they should learn to look with their micrtometers instead of their eyeballs. |

LOL Glenn...
There might be three good ones there,
But you can't measure them over the Internet FFS! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Well, the ugliness above the top ring groove is irrelevant because its not a bearing surface. But given the engine size and assuming it'll probably be hammered on, I don't see cutting corners.
Which kinda reminds me of a factoid about Mickey Thompson...early on he saved up to buy a boring bar, so that he could bore each cylinder in his racing Ford flatheads to fit the used, non-matched pistons that he pulled out of the Ford dealers trash bins.... _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

I'd be more concerned about the cylinder scoring than the piston blemish, especially with the higher cylinder pressures of a turbo. I would use those PC's for a spare engine or local daily driver, but not for a performance build.
If it was mine, I'd put them on the shelf for emergency spares and get something else.

seller response this morning:
"If you want to send me the two pistons that are questionable I will be happy to send you two that are good. I have several spares and am getting rid of all of my 90.5 stuff. I have used several sets of these used pistons and cylinders with no problems. The cylinders have been honed and are straight.
Thanks,"
I may just ship the whole mess to him and eat it.
I want a reliable engine and am realizing the path ive been traveling wont produce that. _________________ '75 Super Beetle

That sounds like a response from GEX. Either the seller has very low standards on his own builds - or - he's trying to make a fast buck with parts that he knows to be questionable.

sounds like the seller is trying to be fair, just has different standards than you and me. I would ask if you can return them all for a full refund and find something else. |
