Just putting this up mainly for friends who are following my progress, and at the same time let others know that not every bus has to be restored to drive it. It's a 62 Kombi, bench seat, 2 popout windows, nothing exciting to most.Pulled out of northern NM a while back:

It didn't have a transaxle, so I used my tow axle to roll it around. I kept it stock height, used a small nut trans and a 67 beam under it. First order of business was replacing the seat wall, it had been cut out so 50s Chevy seats could be installed.

Actually it's a L87 Pearlweiss bus with green spray paint and brown primer over it. The side that faced the sun has a bit of the original paint showing through. Here are a few pics of it once I got it unloaded:

It had registration and inspection stickers in the window which expired in 1969, the battery has completely disintegrated and all that was left was the terminal sticking into the battery:
Luckily a cardboard oil can also disintegrated, protecting the battery tray. It made quite a mess:

The bus was front clipped at one point, they did the nose skin, outer part of the lower valance, and outer part of the lower windshield frame.
If you look close you can see that the pillars were brazed:
The new windshields had to be trimmed slightly at the bottom to fit. _________________ still driving the holy snot out of buses |

Cargo floor is rusty, in the long run it'll need the outer 11 inches along with rockers, jacking points, outriggers, etc. If I tear into it at this point it'll be at least a year before I drive it. I went ahead and PORd it and did some patches for the time being.
The front floors were a little thin, but not needing replacement. I PORd the rusty ares as well:

The dash was warped to hell from the heat from nose replacement, pretty gross.
The bus has been moved around by forklift, there's a bit of damage including this hole in the passenger door:

Included with the bus was a flat front seat, I added the support brackets for it since I hate the hump seat anyway:
I added some of the parts I've had stashed for years, tent brackets and this odd coathook:
I also cleaned up the headlight buckets and added a pair of Cibie H4s. _________________ still driving the holy snot out of buses |

Cleaned up windshield frames, installed windshields and rubber and front emblem:

Installed engine, 1600dp fuelie case that I had lying around. I used a bay dusty conditions air cleaner (also Thing) with a late split window bracket. There was still some crap coming out of the fuel tank so I used a Rabbit diesel fuel filter assembly.
Bus now runs and drives, there's a bit more to do before it's truly roadworthy. Yesterday I took it on its maiden voyage through Taco Bell drive-thru.

That's what I'm talkin about. That's how you deal with a descent bus that most would not even give a second glance. Give it a little love and drive it. Nice. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor

Yes, the Dodge is mine, it's veggie-powered. The other bus is a 60 mango, another friend ended up with that one (a friend of mine actually bought the busses the first time around, I had dibs on the 62 since I towed them). Does anyone know what the coathook came from? It came in a 5 gallon bucket of parts that I bought at litchfield in the 90s. _________________ still driving the holy snot out of buses |
