|
|
Took my engine out Friday for the first time. Didn't get it fully clear of the input shaft on the tranny. Now it slides out but not fully. But so much I can move it pretty freely. Talked to a old VW guy and he said there is a circlip that might have popped off. He suggested trying to see if I could insert it back all the way and see if it would twist in and hold. It goes back in and has a resistive feel when I turn it clockwise and counter, but I can still just pull it back out (again, not fully). Runnable with no worries or is this a big problem? _________________ 67 Type 1 : Driving Project born Sep 66

If you can pull and push the input shaft in and out, you have to remove the transaxle and at least 1 side cover to inspect and repair.

If you ever get the chance to see what actually holds the input shaft in and together you'd understand.
It aint much..
23/24 and 5...
5 is a double ended threaded guide "stud" for the main shaft. It only threads together one way.. so if you start to spin it backwards with the snap ring (24) broken, and the reverse main gear/collar (23) slid off .. the input shaft simply unscrews

So not driveable until I get that secured buck, huh? If the double threaded stud is in place will the clutch plate keep the input shaft in place and engaged? _________________ 67 Type 1 : Driving Project born Sep 66

if the clip that holds the collar gear is broken, it allows it travel into the ring gear and diff case causing further damage. The stud is merely a guide, the collar does the work, no collar and the stud snaps.
If you truly can move the shaft in and out I advise to wait to disassemble and inspect or you will create additional problems trying to drive it. You can buy a gasket kit for about 25 bucks...plus another 20 for the axle seal kits and input shaft seal. If you can supply the self labor, its cheap insurance against further damage. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}
