|
|
Anyone know how to extricate the glass out of a vent window frame without breaking the glass? I need to change out the broken-off latch which goes between the frame and the glass. I also need to paint the frame properly. The windows are out of the car and OLD. Can you buy the rubber insert for these windows?? I might need to cut the old petrefied rubber insert with a razor blade and get the glass out thataway.

| swing the window frame to the open position. Gently pull the frame open, as in spreading the two horizontal pieces away from each other. The glass should be able to be wiggled out. |

i have used the same method as Everett. works perfect. then to get glass back in, push it in as far as posssible by hand, then get a 2x4 and line it up vertically against the glass (keeping a cloth for padding between the glass and 2x4). use a hammer and gently tap the glass in. ive done this process successfully many times. just be careful. _________________ Jahnai Pearson - VW Restoration Technician

| No input on getting the glass out, sorry. But when I was putting the frames back together on my safaris (glass to thick and had to use a bike tube as a gasket/seal) I used some liquid dish soap on the rubber and use a towel around the fame and a small ratchet strap to close them up. Cranked a little, waited, cranked a bit more and it was done. |

everett, was this vicegrip trick used on tempered glass? i would think it would crack laminated glass. _________________ WANTED:

I have pulled laminated Sigla glass with Vice Grips and a piece of inner tube for a pad between the jaws and the glass. Lots of WD-40 on the seal. I didn't need to spread the frame apart, the glass wiggled out.
To put it back in, I just used one of my big (48") woodworking clamps and pressed it back into the frame - easy as could be.
I have never tried Vice Grips on tempered glass, but as long as you don't clamp the jaws down with a death grip, it should survive.
If I had any tempered glass, I would try it. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

if it is sekurit glass, then just slide a screwdriver in between the top of the glass and the window frame and pry it out.
if it is sigla glass, don't try that method because it will crack the glass.

O.K. I got the glass out at the expence of the rubber. There was no way that glass was coming out because of the rust and petrified crud in the bottom channel. I sliced the rubber with an blade and poured in liberal amounts of WD40 and eventually gor it pried out.
Maybe after I rebuild these with new rubber I will be able to pry them out without so much greif.

| I think a popout seal works good also when reassembling. You can leave the extruded part or trim it off. The glass is the same thickness so it works great. The crap that most retailers sell in the roll is very thick and tough to press in glass. I have used the inner tube method also but IMO the popout seal is the best. |

| That crap is called setting tape and most glass shops have it in different thicknesses. I just put one in last week with setting tape from the local glass shop, they gave me a piece for free. Said if it didn't fit to come back and they'd give me a thinner piece. Went in fine first try with a dead blow mallet and a wood block on the opposite side for backing to absorb the blow. |
