Hi guys, I have a 1600cc dp doghouse motor in my bus with an alternator on it. I replaced the alternator with a reman unit from my flaps and it wasnt charging so I brought it back and got another one. I just got the motor back in and started it up and the new one is not charging. I have the wire for the generator light on it as well as the battery lead hooked up and it is definitely grounding through the alt stand. Is there a reason this might not be charging or am I being punished for buying cheap reman garbage from the flaps?
Any help would be appreciated! _________________ '69 Westfalia Camper~Cassidy

2 Different alternators available 1 with Internal Regulator and 1 with
External. Which ONE is yours? _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

| I just went through all the same problem with my 1969 Adventurewagon. Folks on this site directed me in the right direction. Make certain that the alternator light is working (good bulb) and that the socket for that generator/alternator lamp is grounding on the instrument cluster completely. Is the light on when the engine is off but ignition switch is on? Is the light on when the engine is running and above idle? Is the light intermittant? These are the things you must ascertain before going any further. Mahe certain all connections in that circuit are tight. I about drove myself crazy with this one...My situation ended up being a bad relay that was in the circuit to separate my main battery and my auxillary battery when the engine is shut down. I had a lot of issues with the relays after installing several, so I finally tied the two batteries together and tossed the relay entirely. There are no issues now as all my aux battery powers is the stereo, two amps, and an equalizer. The only current draw it sees with the engine shutdown is the memory on the stereo itself which is minimal and the Bus is never shutdown more than a day or two. No other lighting or frig to power! Good luck and checl those connections! |

Thanks for the replies. This is probably the most embarrassing thing I have ever done....
The Generator light bulb was burned out
At least it was an easy fix and not necessary to drop the motor again.
I got it figured out and am once again getting around 14volts. _________________ '69 Westfalia Camper~Cassidy
