| Ok, here's what happened when, I got home I stopped to get the mail well when I did that my bugs idle started to fluctuate then died. When I went to restart it it would just turn over, it finally started and got home seemed to run fine. This morning went to start her up and she wouldn't fire. When she did fire up she ran good then died, just like if I ran out of gas. There's fuel in the tank the pump is working( it's an electric pump) and there's gas in the float bowl. I replaced the fuel pump, and now when I try and start it it acts like it's way out of time. Not sure if I have a fuel problem or an electrical problem. It's a 71 SB 1600 DP 34 pic-3 carb electronic dist valves were just adjusted. It's been running great up until yesterday. Can any of you help me out. Thanks in advance. |

| I'd be investigating the fuel cut off solenoid on the side of the carb. It sounds to me as if you might have a dodgy connection to it. |

That's one thing to check...
Would also want to check the idle control jet.. little bit of dirt can mess things up.
This supposes you have a fuel problem. Could be electrical, but I'd rule that out by giving it a shot of starting fluid to see if its fuel starved... If it tries to go, concentrate on fuel delivery issues. Fuel filter was last replaced when? _________________ jlex.

And one more tip for you. How loud is it clicking? Just bought my 71 SB a few months ago and initially started having this problem (soon followed by others). Mine was clicking but had to have someone else stand at the back to hear it when I turned the key. Turned out mine was going out and wasn't working every time I turned the key, thus the really quiet click. _________________ "Don't be stubborn and rake all the skin from your knuckles, contort your shoulders out of place and throw out your back... First thing I would look at is plugs, then check for loose wires in engine compartment, vacuum leaks, and timing. Good luck!

Well, sounds like you should check your fuel system like the others suggested, however, if that does not work, I would suggest checking and or replacing your coil. If it is old, CHECK IT (use your manual for instructions). They usually last quite a while but if it is old and used up, it won't go any more. If you have the original VW stamped coil, it would probably be worth your while to replace it.

The clicking from the electric fuel pump is loud enough that I can hear it when the motor is running. The coil is maybe a year old, I bought it when I changed to an electronic Dist. I did put a new fuel filter on as well.
Could the dist. be malfunctioning in some way. I don't think its something major but it is frustrating.
I'm going to check this morning to see if jumped time, by checking the valves on #1 head. At least then I'll know it's not a timing issue. |

I really would check the plug too man, not enough spark, you aren't going to have a consistent and correct idle. Would be the easiest thing to do too.

I want to thank everyone for helping me. Had it towed to a shop and they found my dist was bad, so much for electronic dists. It was 13 months old. Had to put the 009 back in but at least its running again.
Thanks Again |
