Hello all! Long time thing owner first time post-er. I have a 74 thing and recently put a rebuilt thing motor back in. To my suprise the throw out bearing does not work with the new fingered pressure plate. My old motor had a three style plate. My question is do i have the wrong transmission in my thing/ where can i find the code one the housing for a cross reference? Thanks in advance for any help! |

Hi drfrancini,
Welcome!
I'm afraid I don't have any advice on your dilemma, but to answer your question, the code should be stamped on the side of the transmission. Check the flat plane below the part number for the stamping. It's likely covered with a bit of grime, so grab a rag and wipe away. If it is an original Thing tranny, it will have an "AV" code.
Good luck, and hopefully someone will chime in shortly with some advice for you! |

Your transmission might not be original to your car.
There are two different release bearing configurations; call them early and late.
The early style looks like this:
It is compatible with a pressure plate that looks like this:
or this:
The key item is the ring on the pressure plate which contacts the release bearing.
The late style uses a guide sleeve which is attached to the transmission, surrounding the input shaft. Like this:
This setup requires the late style pressure plate without the contact ring, like this:
Often, the ring can be removed from the early style pressure plate to make it compatible with the late style release bearing.
It doesn't matter which transmission you use, as long as the pressure plate and release bearing are compatible.
Good luck, Mondshine |
