Hi, all

I have 15" south african steel wheels that have been sitting in my back yard which have collected some rust on the surface. I would like to use these wheels as a off-road set but would like to treat them before putting tires on.

What are some available options?

They are black now with not so terrible rust on.

Thanks

Allen

Depends on what you are after.

You can use CLR to get light rust off. Then just wax. Might be good enough.

Use Metal Prep (acid,) rinse, dry, scuff and paint to suite.

Powder paint (sand blast and coat.)

Or leave alone and just be sure sealing surfaces are clean.

What is your goal? Function or looks?

With rust, function is still there.

I would like a proper look to match my van Very Happy

Sand blast and powder coat then.

Do tires have to come off the wheels for sand blasting and powder coating?

If pulling the tires and valve stems seems like too much trouble, some steel wool, sand paper, masking tape primer and rustoleum and you can get a pretty nice result. Oh, I forgot the elbow grease. Rustoleum spray will lay out pretty nicely but takes forever to dry.
