'87 Vanagon, running well, and the dash temp gauge suddenly began to read steadily at a lower than normal temp.

I've not experienced engine performance issues with this change -- no sluggish start ups or bogging.

I'm a weekend warrior at this troubleshooting and want to make sure I'm correct that the thermostat housing has two sensors -- the "temp II" sensor and the "gauge temp sensor".

Given the sudden and consistent nature of the change at the gauge, and absence of other performance issues that seem to associate to the temp II sender, my assumption is the temp sensor sensor for gauge went bad.

Other possibilities? Is there anything else to assess, or is replacing the dash sender a good first step?

Thanks

Testing of dash gauge is a 2$ handful of 100 Ohm resisters... I'll edit in the crazyvwvanman post that detail it.

Could just be the wiring or connector at the sender. Corrosion or other loss
of connectivity will add resistance which will give a low reading.

Get under there & see what you see...
