Hello, first post here so hello first of all.

I have a 71 bay 1600 and a Karmann Ghia (but the Ghia is another story)

I only got the bay a month ago and plan on using it over the summer and then starting a resto.

I've had a few issues with backfires and loss of power so set up the timing and all was fine however a trip out on Friday led to a breakdown and closed points.

So I purchased and fitted a Petronix igniter but I'm a little confused by the wiring, I've had a look and seen a few questions on here already but couldn't find anything specific to help solve my problem so here goes.

Install: removed condenser, points and fitted kit ~ black wire to negative ~ red wire to positive. However I had to remove the black wire which splits and goes to the solenoid and automatic choke.

With the red wire from the Pertronix and the other red wire (starter) connected there now isn't a positive terminal for the black wire. That's where I'm confused because without this wire connected the engine stars and runs sweet but I'm concerned I should have the black wire attached too?

Any help and tips appreciated.

Thank you

They do sell spade connecters that allow you to "piggy back" off another spade. Look at your FLAPS. You may have to cut the choke wire and crimp one of these spades on there. I had the same issue once. Do you currently have 3 male spade terminals on the pos 15 and neg 1 of the coil?

Hi

Cheers for the reply, I have 4 male terminals 2 pos and 2 neg

Both pos are now used and one neg.

So what I should do is get a connector and join the red pos wire from the Pertronix to the black wire that leads to solenoid and auto choke (effectively all 3 wires off the pos 15 terminal?

Thanks

No The best option here is to get some three male spade termanals for the pos and neg of your coil for a total of six. This way you will not have to splice or crimp any wires.
