|
|
I got my stock 1200cc in my 1961 beetle running after 15 years of sitting. Runs great, but a previous owner somewhere down the line had a wad of duct tape wrapped around the smaller tube on the intake on the drivers side. In turn, there was a hole underneath of the tape. Is there a way to repair that hole or is the intake scrap now? _________________ 1965 Herbie Replica. 1776cc dual Kads.

Remove the manifold and weld it up. The smaller tube is the heat riser. Hot exhaust passes from one side to the other and warms the fuel/air before it enters the engine. _________________ Joey

Most likely the hole was there to help clean out the crud in the heat riser. Before I would do the repair, I would work something like a clutch cable through the riser to make sure its clear. do a search for the various procedures for this. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.

I will try welding it. It is a definate burn through or rust out hole. Looks like they were cheap and duct taped over it. Thanks for the insight! _________________ 1965 Herbie Replica. 1776cc dual Kads.

Hose clamp a piece of aluminum can or tin can over the hole. _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

They most likely taped it over because it was plugged and would not pass exhaust through it. So to do the job properly remove the manifold, clean the tube out and re-weld it. No band aid jobs. When done right and ground flush with the manifold and painted you will never know there was ever a hole. |

I will be welding it in the next couple of days. These old 1200 parts are getting hard to find so I don't really want to just pitch it and get another one. _________________ 1965 Herbie Replica. 1776cc dual Kads.
