|
|
| So while driving my 67 today I noticed as I backing out of my parking spot that There was a dragging sound coming from the right rear wheel and the car was moving like the wheel was egg shaped. When I drove forward it smoothed out and became quiet as I shifted into 2nd. when I got home I went to investigate and that's when I found out that the the axle nut was burning hot. Any Ideas? |

Axle nut still have the cotter pin in it? If not, maybe it's loose and the wheel is on its way to falling off. Depending on how long it's been that way the splines on the axle and the mating surfaces in the hub may be worn from the movement. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

well that is the problem. The axle nut is so rusted on that i broke a 1/2in drive ratchet, and I drained my air tank trying to free it up with my impact, despite my effort no movement. so I don't think it is loose.
Is the rear lubricated with grease like up front or is there something else because they are the drive wheels? I wonder if it has run dry. |

Check this thread. You might want to buy the special tool to remove the axle nut. But yes, you should probably just remove the drum to have a look.

That guy should have spent his $100 on beer instead of that cheap chinese repop of a torque tool! The tool has it's place for other tasks, but be careful with 5 lug drums, its a couple mm too long making it skip the gears anytime you torque it up.
To drill it and cold chisel wasn't a big deal, just a pain. Take your time. Penetrating oil and heat may work, for me it didn't.
Trust me, once you get it off you'll want to yell really loudly with excitement. _________________ -Ryan
