I've wanted one since I was a kid. Finally got one for my 52nd birthday!
It's a 59 pan and a 61-65 motor. I've been working on trying to get it to stop chattering when taking off in 1st, and popping out of 2nd gear. Replaced the coupler and added a non-existent bushing that pushed through the hole that holds it in place. I need a 2nd person to help with that. Transmission mounts seem okay, so I'm thinking it's the bushing.
When I got it none of the lights or gauges worked. I've got the 4 lights up front working, the taillights and horn, but that's it. I downloaded a wiring diagram, but only some wire colors match up. Anyone able to give me an idea based on the pictures? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For the chattering have you checked your bowden tube curve?
As far as the wiring that would be a remove and replace if I owned that buggy. |

Have to agree with JPS if wiring is badly butchered, sometimes it easier to just start over unless you really like challenges...

Awesome! I too had wanted one since childhood and finally got it 3 years ago. Yes that is your typical Buggy rat's nest! Nothing time and patience won't sort out. I have mostly sorted mine but a new one might have been quicker.
I love that the little 1200 is still running! Sweet! |

Thanks guys! I'm super stoked on it! I feel like a 10 year old kid at Disneyland on the autopia ride when driving it. As far as the bowden curve, I did read something about that. I will have to look into it further, I didn't fully understand what I read. I need to get a Bentley! I'll post a picture here.
I know the pictures of the wiring look bad, but I don't think it's as bad as it looks. There's only a few wires disconnected, and the others seem to be well secured. I suspect it was done pretty well, then someone got ahold of it that didn't know what they were doing. Not that I do, but to rewire the whole thing is more than I can atack right now. Thanks again for the comments, this by far is the most fun car I've ever had! _________________ 1971 Westy (The Mean Tangerine)

Yes. Looks awfully close to straight, which makes it most likely the cause of your clutch chatter. Also, that clutch cable end is a ticking time bomb. Here's a good thread about that:

Also, pretty sure it's a "dune runner" with the modified t-bird style hood. Would you agree?

Yep, that's it. I have the same car.

The shift rod bushing may not be your problem, but I'm willing to bet it needs to be replaced. Shifting is so much nice once you do. It's an easy job for one if you make a simple tool out of PVC pipe. I have a few pictures in this thread, just scroll down a bit to see them.

| I learned that the shifter adjustment is as critical as both the front bushing and the rear coupler. I replaced the bushing, replaced the coupler with a quality part and then watched a video on how to properly adjust the shifter. Prior to that, I just thought you throw the two bolts in the holes and go for it. Shifts much better now. One more area to look is the actual shift rod (if you can't get it to shift properly with the other stuff) remember that shift rod had to be cut down 14" like the rest of the chassis. If the fabricator didn't get it lined up it can make those problems worse. Looks like a fun project. Enjoy |

Nice custom tool Andy! I'm going to make one!
Yes Mike, I was wondering about that too. I took the shift rod into the local vw shop (vee parts) and showed it to the guy that works there. He's got a manx and said it looked okay. I'm gonna add 3 washers to the bowden tube and see if that helps. _________________ 1971 Westy (The Mean Tangerine)

This can't be right. Do you have to remove the pedal cluster every time you loosen the clutch cable? I mean it didn't feel like it came off the "pedal arm" where it's connected. But now it feels sloppy and there's a clicking noise. There's not much difference in the curve that I can tell. I've got not started it yet because the clutch really feels weird.
Another thing is that there's stuff going on inside the tunnel that seems strange to me, one of the POs cut a hole in the passengers side of the tunnel and may have cut something. It looks like 2 metal tubes struck together that are just hanging in there. Can anyone give some insight to what that is? Thanks in advance!
