Hello the samba,
I am rebuilding my engine and need to know the torque specs for the cylinder heads. They are 15mm bolts and all I can find is 10mm and 8mm. |

10 and 8mm refers to the width of the threads, not the head of the nut where you put the socket. With the nuts off, measure the width of the head studs. They should be either 8 or 10mm. Or measure the threaded hole in the head nuts. _________________ If a water cooled engine cools its water with air, isn't it just an overcomplicated air cooled engine? |

15mm wrench size, stud diameter is either 10mm or 8mm.. |

And. Concerning torque specs:
Tighten in two steps.
First step 84 INCH pounds (which is only 7 foot pounds.
Then:
M10 nuts: 23 foot pounds.
M8 nuts 18 foot pounds.
Nick, you should get a Hayne's manual to show you the exact sequence to do this tightening. They are cheap and can be bought at most auto stores or VW on-line vendors.

Hi,
Am restoring a 1600 dual port. I don't know the year of the engine as it is not original to the car which is 1971. Am confused by the cylinder head stud size. I measured the diameters of the bolts and they ranged from 8.87 to 8.95mm. So are these 8mm or 10mm studs??. Need to know as this affects torque setting. The thread diameter on the bolts was larger at around 9.71mm so am guessing I have got 10mm studs and therefore torque to 23 ft pounds? The small bolt diameters (certainly not 10mm) however has me confused. Help please!!
thanks,
Peter W

It sounds like the studs have "rolled"threads, its a manufacturing process where they start with a blank rod that would be smaller than 10 mm (your 8.87 measurements) and a roller presses the threads into the rod, compressing the material and swelling the diameter of the threaded portion. It creates a stronger thread than by the traditional method of cutting the threads, and its alot faster/ more economical method of manufacter.
Or
The unthreaded portion has been relieved by cutting the material away for clearance issues
I'm betting on the rolled threads
It sounds like you have 10 mm studs |
