My shifting has been getting tricky, so pulled up the boot covering the plate with the threaded studs to see if it was off. It was, but when I went to tighten the nut, it would tighten down a bit, then pop back out (like skipping a thread) I was hoping it was the nut, but now I'm afraid it is the threads on the stud. I've tried washers to help the nut hold and a lock washer. It is very odd, it just won't tighten.
It is 104 outside, and I am putting off crawling under the van to see if those bolts/studs are removable, and assuming not, what part they are attached to.
If anyone has any advice, I'd be glad to hear it.
Steel wool around the bolt or smaller nut come to mind, but seems like a pretty temporary fix. |

The plate the shifter ball attaches to is nuted from below by 4 nuts and retains the shifter box. They sandwich the floor. So, it is repairable, but here are a couple ideas before you get to far into it.
One, is it possible the nut is damage not the stud? If so, the nut should be available at most hardward stores. The size is 6mm x 1.0 pitch I believe. Also, if it is the stud, could you add a washer spacing the nut further up and letting you then tighten the nut?
A used replacement base might be quickest from the classifieds, or you could remove it and weld a bolt in place of the stripped stud. Not the end of the world though. |
