Just put in a rebuilt motor into a friend's Westy. During the break in test drive, had one issue where it didn't want to start - hooked a jump box to it, and it started.
He just took it for a test drive for about an hour, turned it off, now it cranks real slow and won't start, and as it's cranking the horn is sounding.
Battery light was not on during any of the driving, so alternator apparently was giving proper charge.
Any thoughts on what this can be? Is it related to being hot? Starter draw going up through the roof when it's hot from being driven (next to a hot motor)?
Beyond these two incidents, after putting the motor in have started it without issue about 20+ times. Each time the starter cranks a little slower than I'd think to be normal, but fires right up.
Battery is only a few months old.

This is a 87 schematic but I don't see any connection between the horn and the Ignition. Could be something screwy with the ignition switch or the steering column. Check to see that any connectors to the column and Ignition switch are plugged in all the way! The slower cranking is something else though! Does the engine still turn over by hand easy? _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

OK, so apparently the horn issue was an anomolie.
Seems like when the bus has been driven, and the motor is hot, it has a starting issue. Starter cranks, but slowly as if the battery is drained, and doesn't want to start. Give it time to cool down, and it cranks better and starts.
Appears to be related to heat - when started cold, bus starts just fine, and can be started several times in a row, so I know the battery is not drained. Again, battery is almost brand new as well. And tested, it has 12.5 or better volts.
I've gotten theories from other non-VW folks that advanced timing could possibly play a role when hot, or a ground issue. Might that be true of these motors? Any suspect areas to check?
Thanks in advance _________________ 72 Super - in pieces

Are we talking about the Water cooled engine or the air cooled? I know the timing can sure cause this and so can a weak starter or bad battery cables. The new motor is likely harder to turn over when it's hot too. Hope it breaks in ok. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |
