After many trips to the auto parts store and unwilling to use my NOS Judson Research belts, can anybody tell me the correct size replacement belt? I have searched the forums and can't find any info. _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

why not measure the nos belt, or take the nos belt to the auto parts store so they can measure it? _________________ Jason

I made many trips with the nos belt there. The problem is there is no way to adjust the belt, the local flaps did not have any that seemed to work, either to wide, different angle V, etc. I felt it would be easier to get a belt number from someone who's running one. I'm tired of bolting and unbolting the Judson to get belts on or offand want to get it on the DYNO _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

The original Gates belts have long been superceded and everyone who runs a 36hp Judson seems to recommend a slightly different size belt.
However I'm reliably informed if you go to your local Mercedes dealer and ask for Mercedes belt A0099975292 coolant pump (75-86ish), it will be a pretty good fit. The size of this belt is 10x988.
BTW on the 36hp, Judsons use intake manifold gaskets to take up any belt slack. Too loose add another gasket between the blower and the manifold.
The alternative is to email George Folchi ([email protected]) and ask him to mail a pair of belts to you or ask him to make up a double belt tensioner. I used a double width tensioner on my 36hp and just used two 10x1000 belts. _________________ John.

After many many trips back and forth to 3 different flaps I still haven't been able to find any belts that will work. If anybody has a correct belt number/manufacturer or the name and address/phone/e-mail where I might find them that would be great. I just hate to use the NOS Judson ones I have as they would be better in someones collection along with the original box and instructions. _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

Did you read my previous post?? |
I recieved 2 Mercedes belt A0099975292 and turned out to be 10X980, to short. I e-mailed the guy you listed for belts, no reply.
I have searched the net for a 9.5 and 10 by 988/990 belt with no luck.
What are people using on their 36 hp Judsons, either I find replacement belts or will use the NOS ones which should be in somebodys display in my opinion _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

This is curious as I've just checked with my local Mercedes dealer. I read out the part number and asked him to read out what the spec is for that belt.
He said 9.5x990 which would be useable with the aid of intake gaskets to take up the slack, however you have been supplied with 10x980...very odd. _________________ John.

Maybe it's a U S superceeded thing. _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

Call them and get them to read out the belt spec from the computer...if it the same as over here i.e. 9.5x990 they're supplying out of spec belts...you should get your money back. _________________ John.

Folks, I've been running my Judson for a few months now with the double belts. It took me a couple tries to get matched belts but finally succeeded. I feel as though I'm getting too much vibration or oscillation from the double belt setup. I'm wondering if anyone has gone from the double belt to a double belt with tensioner and noticed any overall change in vibration. Or is anyone running a single belt with or without a tensioner, as the 40hp units are setup? Thanks! |

Let me direct you straight to the answer to your question rather that put you through the "c-f" that I went through with these "experts" when I asked the same question a couple of months back. It will save you a lot of frustration, money and time and opinions from a lot of people that don't know the answer to your question but are willing to opine any way.
If you want to waste your time reading thorough that thread, here is the reference.

If you want to buy the product and get on with fixing your installation, here is a photo of the product. I do not use a tensioner, waste of money and time, therefore I use the 980mm. If you use a tensioner, you will need the 1000. Either way, you will need two of these.

| For the record, I'm running Continental 10x990 double belts which seem to fit fine. I'm just wondering if the tensioner setup cuts down on belt vibration. |

Not in my experience. Multiple gaskets to raise or lower the supercharger has worked best for me. _________________ Charlie

The tensioner eliminates the need for multiple intake gaskets to space the belts as they stretch out. I used an old alternator bracket and an old idler tensioner pulley from a Golf/ Jetta pushing on the outside of both belts to tension my 36hp Judson belts. I bought belts from my FLAPS for this, and discovered how their belt numbering works. I ended up using Advance Auto Parts number 39515. The first 3 digits is the belt diameter in inches (39 5/8") and the last 2 digits in the width in 32nds of an inch (15/32"); so 39.5 times 25.4 equals 1003MM diameter, while 15/32" is 15 divided by 32 equals .46875 times 25.4 equals 11.906MM width. This belt is slightly over 1000MM and slightly over 11MM wide and it fits fine. Originally, I tried a 40515 and it was so loose that it couldn't be tensioned with my setup. I also had a problem with quality control on their belts; one was tight and the other was so loose that I could not tension them both properly. A different pair of belts was only slightly better so I ended up using the best 2 after multiple tries. They don't have belts available in every possible increment of length and width, so it was a compromise with them, but I will try 2 new 10 X 1000 Conti-techs, as soon as I can order them online, as I can't find them locally.

On pages 25 and 45 you will see the belt size numbering system for Gates.
GT15395E for Gates, 15390 or 15388 for Dayco, 39515 for Advanced AP., 13391 for Goodyear, JB-394 for Motorcraft, 25-7390 for NAPA, AV10LP990 for Conti?, and many more...... |

Well, now that I've had more time to work the issue, I have developed a 36hp double-belt tensioner that works well and looks very nice. It allows you to adjust the tension or change belts on the side of the road (if necessary) in minutes, without all the aggravation of removing and reinstalling your supercharger and having to produce some extra 36hp intake gaskets. If you drive your car, it's what you need to have! It takes up the looseness and vibration deflections of the spinning belts and dampens them out. It is not an 'automatic' tensioner with a spring-loaded mechanism. It is merely a bent steel bracket and a sealed-bearing smooth idler pulley with all the hardware need to install it. I include an internal locking washer to put between the bracket and the supercharger. This will keep it properly tensioned once you snug it down where you want it. I also include some spacer washers to install behind your upper pulley, so the added thickness of the bracket, longer end-plate bolt and washers supplied will clear your upper pulley. The change is minimal there's no major misalignment of your Judson upper and lower drive pulleys. The bracket is bare steel, so you may plate, powdercoat or paint it to your own style. The pulley is powdercoated black and the design looks at home on your vintage speed engine. It is all very heavy construction and will likely last a lifetime. I'm selling them for $75 plus shipping.

I have no intention of infighting riots over V belts and sizes, but I just went through finding new belts myself here in Portland OR for my judson... I will have made 4 trips back and forth to Autozone this week to get the belts that seem to fit the best... I found some info on the forums and went in with it, started with a 10A0990 size belt from Duralast, it was too big. I called and said I needed a 10A0980 size, the guy guessed at the part number, ordered from another store, and they were actually 10A0965, too small... Went back and finally got the 10A0980 size that fits very well. The part number is 15385 and is manufactured by Duralast.
Also, not sure if this is "correct" or not for installation, but I put a socket on my generator and use my hands to roll the belt onto the Judson pulley so I'm not unbolting it every single time. Since there seems to be some anger associated with this topic, just wanted to try to offer some thoughts and information from my experience. |
