It appears this does not want to fit into my nose mount. What’s the solution?? It looks like it’s about an inch too “fat” to allow the mounts studs to make it through the rim.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks ! |

Web search for "coupling nuts." Three of those and a few pieces of "all thread" or "threaded rod" will extend the threads to meet your wider tire. Most VW lug threads are 14x1.5, but spare tire mounts may be a different thread.
…You have tried flipping the wheel around, right?

Big Emma has a General Grabber on the front with about 1/4" of thread exposed after the nuts. There is nothing special about the mount. _________________ '75 Riviera - 'BIG EMMA' - Travel Beast

Yeah I flipped the tire ..lol. Ok I will see if I can’t extend those studs on the bracket.
Not sure how big Emma got hers to fit. Maybe we have different brackets?? |

I bet there are different stud lengths on different brackets.
Putting the rim on inside out can use shorter studs that stress the mount less, but putting the rim on outside out allows you to mount a hubcap, if you care for such things…

Ain’t no way mine would be able to hold my spare that way. But as previously suggested, some stud extensions could make it happen. Is your spare also resting on the bumper? I do like the hubcap as opposed to a spare tire cover

Yes, the spare is resting on the bumper in that pic. That way the bumper takes almost all the weight, and the studs are mostly responsible for securing the wheel in a collision. You almost have to mount the wheel this way if you want it "hubcap out" without bending the nose skin significantly. There are also mounts that someone makes that use the front bumper brackets to suspend the wheel a few inches above the bumper and in front of the nose. Theoretically no contact, though I haven't seen one in person to inspect it for strength.
A cover is good at reducing UV rays too, which can dry/crack the tire over time.

I recently went through this on my bus. The dumbass painter took off my spare tire mount and it took me awhile to figure out how to reattach it properly.
I ended up making some long steel backing plates and welded nuts onto it. That way my wife was able to hold the backing plates in place while I secured the tire mount to the nose with bolts.
I also used rubber washers on both sides so that there was no metal to metal contact anywhere to rub and create rust.
When this was done, I ordered another general grabber to mount on the spare wheel, but quickly realized....why do I need a general for a spare? So I cancelled that order and just ordered a cheap correct normal sized tire for about $50. It is MUCH lighter than another general and I wanted as little weight as possible hanging up there.
Bus depot sells a spare mount that attaches to the bumper for extra support.
Oh yeah...I also cut a piece of thick felt that is the same size as my spare and put it in between the nose and the tire when I attached it. That way the tire doesnt rub the paint. |

I use a normal sized spare as well and if I get a flat in the rear I will put one of the fronts with the Grabber on the back and the spare up front.
Mine was not even coming close to fitting on the nose mount or the Westy spare tire area. _________________ _______________________

It will still chafe the paint. Been there and done that. Also the felt holds moisture for a long time after it rains. That makes rust. One cannot mount a spare tire on the nose and avoid paint damage over time. It is just the way it is. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

I was able to use nuts as spaces to hold the tire away from the paint about a 1/4”. The wheel sits on the bumper with a rubber pad protecting the bumper. |

I dont believe this to be the case. The felt is short term. Long term the proper solution for me is to purchase some clear paint protection film cut to the size of the tire contact patch. Might even do the whole nose once I get my paint finally taken care of. Clear films these days can do amazing things and you really cant even tell they are installed. |
