Simple timing question

Will having my timing advanced too far (Currently at 9 degrees before TDC) make my 1600 DP engine with a 34 PICT carb run rich?

I Smell fumes, didn't before I reset timing, and have since replaced all the muffler gaskets.

The timing you set determines when the dist will fire the spk plugs.

The Carb feeds the fuel to the cyls combustion area and the adjustment is there be it Lean or Rich......your adjustment determines that.

Exhaust gskt is. to seal any exhaust coming out the heads to the muffler.

Did you touch any vacuum lines when you set your static timing? Fumes come from the fuel system, sparks come from the timing. One can't cause the other. Your timing should be set at full advance to 30 degrees.
