Hi
I'm looking to join the ranks of Vanagon owners but I could use some help understanding the value of this vehicle. It seems the values vary greatly. Anyway, I'm considering this 1987 Syncro Westy.
Quote: |
Get the bad out of the way first.
Front hood under windshield has cancer
There's a small ding in the rear hatch (paint hasn't broken).
Now the good.
Immaculate untouched original interior.
New Front CV axles (German) 2012
New CD Player with iPod connection, new speakers in rear 2012.
New radiator in 2010.
New starter in 2011.
New hatch strut shocks (HD) 2012
All factory curtains in good shape.
Original pop-up tent canvas has one small hole but all fabric is in great shape.
Original stove & fridge. Stove has never been used.
A/C doesn't work but all components there.
Hankook tires all around with about 3500 miles.
The drivetrain is all original. Mileage is 109,000. I am the second owner and have all the receipts. It's a California vehicle so the undercarriage is great. It drives like new and the only reason I'm selling it is I just don't use it enough to have it sit most of the year.
Paint is in pretty good condition, but it needs to be repainted soon. |
I will look at it soon. Anything I should be sure to look at or check when seeing this van up close? |

sounds good, but untouched interior?, you might want to bring in a crime lab and go over that item. Let us know if you buy it and what you paid, I also have a 87 Syncro Westy, totally restored, and like to keep up with the $$$$
sale, ball park anyway |

Well, a proper windows out paint job will be north of $10k when done by a professional with quality materials.
I know, I know, you can use a roller in your own garage
It is mentioned right in the ad so I would figure without even seeing the vehicle, that it needs paint.
I would recommend having a Syncro owner or shop well versed in Syncro drive it.
Many failure and upgrade possibilities with a van that age and possibly mostly stock/original parts.
The front halfshafts have been replaced, depends what kind were used before placing that in the "good" column.
Anyhow...getting into a Syncro you like, can afford and having a plan/budget to work on it as you drive it is highly recommended. |

The seller will take the highest, the buyer wants the lowest.
What usually happens is they both meet in the middle
Without a picture.....pictures, tough to tell.
I'm to lazy to search for the cut and paste description. |

Check for interior water damage & rust under the front carpets. I doubt that windsheild seal is sealing very well.

I didn't look under the carpet in front. Overall it looked like a good van, drove welL. The guy that owns it seems like a good fellow who fixed what needed fixing properly but didn't upgrade. The interior was in good shape, appliances never used, upholstery clearly used, no major problems that I could see. The underbody looked good as did the engine compartment. It was dusty but orderly.
I thought since there were a few mid/late 80's Westy's that sound more or less original for sale in the 8-9000 range that a Syncro would be worth about 5000-6000 more. So maybe it was worth between 14 and 16,000?
How is my math? |

Depends on where the job is done.
New York, for a pointed example at Dylan, has been researched recently to have one of the two highest shop rates in the nation.
We can get a windows and seals out, painted and jambed two stage paint job for a few thousand here in the industrial area of San Diego. I have seen several of the jobs and they are nice production jobs that meet the requirements of So Cal just fine. Yes, there are detail differences between a Vanagon "pro" job and a production job, but at a 5th to 4th the cost it is fine. My last production job still shines just fine after 7 years, but is bad where we did poor body work. Good enough.
But, to the issue of cost of the van type in question, the prices are all over the place but generally are higher than what you would think is reasonable. then again, what is asked and what is paid can be two different things.
Choose your poison. Fixed up ready to go or you do your self. Depends on your needs and explectaions.
And yes, you are low..... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Uh, no.
If you can find a nice waterbox for 8-9k, you should probably buy it. If you can find a 4x4 for 16k, you should buy two of them. |

Whatever you do, take it to a VW mechanical for a full inspection BEFORE you make an offer. They can tell you if the drive train is functioning properly. Syncro componants are not cheap to replace. Then you have some bargaining power. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

First rule you learn in Syncro school: You never bargain with a Syncro owner. If you try to cut the price down, you will just be told to leave, and all the hostages will die.
is that what you want? |

I don't know. A piece of @#@% is a piece of @#@% any way you slice it, syncro or not; so be careful and be mindful of everything it will need. My personal opinion is that syncros are waaaaaay overrated - yeah, they have a cool factor reputation, but if you intend to take a 26 year old 4wd Westy where you think a 2wd can't go, up and over rocks and drive it like it's a beefed up pickup, you're going to have one problem after another = $$$$$. If you want a good Vanagon camper, leave your ego at the door, save a lot of money and heartache, and find a good condition 2wd with NO rust - even the 2wd vanagons are like goats and will go most anywhere you would want to go anyway. Then go get a 4wd PU for offroading with the $$ you save, and still have money left over. Just my 2 cents.

So when I am hundreds or thousands of miles from home in a 2wd Westy and I want to get up and over some very rough stuff to a great spot I should just turn around, drive home, and come back with a pickup truck???? That will save save me money somehow?????

if you already have a 2wd bus, you might be cheaper and easier getting a diff lock fitted, it'll make a big difference getting up and over stuff, and come in at a hug amount less than a syncro _________________ lucy our westy

Aside from 4WD, what is different about a syncro compared to a 2WD Westy? The owner said the Syncros were made by Mercedes. I'm not totally sure what that would mean but I assume he meant to suggest that maybe a Syncro is also more durable? |
