'78 Westy 2liter fuel injected bay window type II with electronic ignition.
I felt proud when finishing instal of a new Bosch starter today. I was a little surprised when the engine turned over. Anyway, my pride plummeted when realizing I no longer hear the Electronic fuel pump come to life when turning the key to the on position.
I probably fried something (a coil or fuse) when attaching the wrong cables to the solenoid?
Maybe something was knocked loose when getting to the bolt to replace the starter motor?
Anyway I am obviously at a loss with minimal experience. I have tried every scenario of wiring at the solenoid without any fuel pump assistance.
I am going back outside to check, yet again, for anything disconnected but I am about to give up and have it towed tomorrow.

Welcome,
The fuel pump should not come on with the key, it should only run if the starter is actually cranking or the engine is running, sounds like you've been dealt a strange hand by your previous owner. Read this http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6 and post some pictures of your starter and your engine compartment, I'm particularly interested in the double relay attached to the firewall at the left front corner of the engine compartment. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I took photos and am having more nightmares getting them uploaded. Thanks but maybe tomorrow. My bus ran fine before I swapped the starter. I am looking for ideas on getting the electronic fuel injection system working again because fuel is no longer being pumped into the engine as it was before the instal. Is it possible it isn't firing up because it is on ramps and the rear is 11" higher? (yeah stupid question) |

Photos ended up in the gallery titled 68-79 Bus- Campers. I am interested if the solenoid is connected properly. Photos are under my name m@.
Thanks again
|

Well it appears you've got the starter and it's wiring installed correctly, assumedly the bus ran before you started on this endeavour?
Your next assignment is to remove the air filter cover and filter element and get your hands on a chopstick or similar long poking device, then turn the key to the run position and shove the poker into the square hole remaining in the airclaener so it depresses the spring loaded flap a few inches down that hole, do you hear the fuel pump running when you do that? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I could probably figure it out if I could see a better schematic than this on on the Technical.
But yeah, looks like a lot of wiring! Can you feel the Fuel Pump Relay click?
I wonder what the extra terminal on the lower side of the starter solenoid is for? Might be the latch voltage for the fuel pump relay! I should hook that up on mine!

Thanks Dan.
I do not hear anything when preparing to turn the key fully. My bus used to make a sound as if an electrical action was occurring before the start. Now it just tries to start but isn't getting fuel. |

Your fuel injection relay should click when you turn the key to the "run" position, but the fuel pump relay should not (these are the two parts of the double relay.
If your fuel pump relay was closing before when the key was just turned to the "run" position then something wasn't right at that time. No telling what kind of juryrigging someone did to make it work the way it was, but you need to figure out how to undo it and put it back the way VW designed it. The original design can not be readily improved on/updated in this case.
You should have a red/white wire that runs from one of the male spades on the starter solenoid to the 86a pin on the double relay. I suspect it is this wire that was/is hooked up incorrectly. |

busdaddy, I did what you suggested with the poking. This assured me that my fuel pump was working properly. Since I had that knowledge I was able to shift focus to insuring everything was connected properly. I realized that when removing the air box, to get at the starter bolt, I had disconnected a hose. I put the filter back together again and it fired up immediately. If it wasn't for you and your suggestion, I would have spent the day troubleshooting relays, injection connections, wiring, etc. Thank you so much for your concern.
And yes busdaddy and wildthings, I no longer hear a pump or any type of electrical sound when preparing to turn the key from on to start position. Maybe this was my solenoid dying before.
Thank you all so very much.
