My longblock is finished, heads are bolted on, so I started putting on the tin. A few problems arose.

1) I have no center or lower right pieces. I believe they look like H and I in the following diagram. I have part G.

Are these the pieces that I need? No one near me has any type 4 tin, period, so the classifieds/bustedbus/avery's/etc. are the only way I'm getting anything. The curvature of the lower right one doesn't look like it will mate with the cylinder tin correctly though, so I'm kind of confused. Edit: I installed the alternator mount...now it makes sense.

Another option would be using the rear tin from the 914 and just cutting it. The 914 had an awkward hump on the rear left, which was welded to the tin. This joint was like swiss cheese, so I cut it off to see what it would look like if I just the lower rear/right of the 914 piece to the rear left bus piece. It appears that it would work, with a bit of trimming, but I can't be certain. Sorry for the crappy cellphone photos.

2)
When mocking up my unpainted pieces, I put this one on and I'm kind of baffled. What the heck is this square hole for behind #1? Avery's describes it as a warm air duct, but I have no idea how something would attach to this spot. Should I just weld a piece of sheet metal over it?

Thanks.

Both from this ad: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1496202 although there were more.

And here's a clue on the hole: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=299915

The 914 tin would be a lot more trouble than it's worth to make it fit. The exhaust and heat shield below would interfere, besides not fitting the engine hole. The fanshroud looks to be from a 914, too. It might be a trick to check your oil level? Smile

The holes in back are for the preheat tube

Roger that, guys. I sent the fellow in the classifieds an email.

For reference - is the shape of the 914 tin wrong for the engine bay? It looks awfully close, it's just that it has a lip, while the bus tin doesn't appear to have one.

And yes, I've heard that checking the oil with this will require some coordination. Laughing I'm hoping I don't need to fab a custom flexible one though. Same to using the oil filler. The advantage is that there's no dipstick boot to crack and leak. Wink

I don't plan on using the stock breather, opting instead for individual filters, so it sounds like it's fine to just block it off then.

It is pretty different, the tin. I see you do have the dipstick above, I'd missed it before. It seems do-able with an engine hatch. There is just the compression ratio difference then. You could cap off the head vents. Some say it is better to, even.

That made it much clearer, thanks. I had trouble finding a photo of a buttoned-up T4, for whatever reason. Trying to shape the 914 tin into place is far more trouble than it is worth. Laughing

Head vents were introduced in '72 or '73, I believe. This is a 1.7 from a '71. As for the compression, I've lowered it to a static ratio to around 7.3 to 7.6 (not certain on my CC calculations, so I'll never know. I think it's closer to 7.6.)
