Hi, i have a 66 bus (Deluxe) with transaxle and reductions boxes matched up to a 1600 single port engine (see pics). My question is, the clutch pressure plate that was used when i removed, is the spring type (i guess that's what it's called - has the clips - see pic) can I, and should I, if possible, replace with a conventional clutch plate that has the fingers (diaphragm type)? The reason i asked, is one of the clips came undone (you can see it undone in my picture of clutch plate - it's the lower one) and made a rattling noise when clutch pedal was compressed and this could be avoided if i can use a diaphragm type plate? Suggestions on types of clutch pressure plates and clutch discs to replace with would be helpful. I was thinking of purchasing something off of Wolfsburg West. Thanks for the help.. Cheers
BTW, my bus has been upgraded to 12v

There is an image button you can click on to post viewable images in your post. Click image button before the image address and after pasting image address, or if you copy the image address at top of the image in the gallery, it will have the complete postable address already.
You have a nine spring clutch plate which is NLA. Too bad, it is the best stock clutch for a bus. We are collecting those up in hopes to someday have them rebuilt.
You can use a diaphragm type clutch PP. We have had problems with those all too soon, maybe quality has improved since then.
Wolfsburg West does sell for the most part the best VW parts available. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

You do need:
Stock air cleaner.
Metal fuel line.
The plastic spark wire plugs in the fan shroud. These keep the plug wires off hot intake heat risers or just rubbing thru and shorting out, and plug the holes in the shroud to keep cooling in from leaking out of shroud.
Fuel line hanger on the left side of the fan shroud. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Hi Eric&Barb:
Thanks for the tips. So from what you are saying in reference to the clutch, I am tempted to reuse the pressure plate, it looks new (no wear that i can see), and replace all other clutch parts ie: clutch plate, clutch release bearing, etc. When the clutch was in full working order, it did feel great.
I'm also testing below how to post a pic as you described. Cheers on that too.
Thanks again.
Silvano

| Reset the spring where it goes and use that pressure plate. If the pressure plate surface is glossy then sand it with 80 grit sandpaper by hand. |

i am all for using the 9 spring clutch, they work very well. The diaphragm clutch type has been around for several decades, they have a much easier action. (less force needed on the pedal).
use what you got, and in a couple of years when you need to replace it, get what is available then. _________________ regards

Yes, reuse it if it is working. If it was the lower clip that holds on the plate the TO bearing seats against, fix the clip and enjoy.
Need hose clamps on the fresh air tubes top and bottom to keep those from popping off and loosing the cooling air. BTDT on the grapevine in S. CA, oil temp gauge shot way up. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
