Figured i would introduce myself, and i have a few questions as well.
I recently bought a 1974 SB from a co worker. He is the principal of the automotive department at a local tech school, and had purchased the car from a police impound auction in NC a few years back. The students stripped the car, repaired some pinholes in the floor boards, blasted, primed, and painted the whole thing AMC big bad orange (which won over green by one vote...dammit..) and transported it back to his home, where he had slowly been reinstalling body parts. The motor was pulled, and a "known good" 1600cc dual port "ah" engine installed. Fresh carb rebuild, feels like good compression, everything looks in order. Not really any rust, the underside looks pretty damn good. Some peeling old paint, but i cant find any rust, cracks, or anything.
This is my first beetle. And, admitably, my first carbed, and my first distributor based car. I come from the land of efi, specifically, honda, porsche, and others. So this is a lot of good learning. Ha.
I installed points, a condensor, a new rotor and cap, and roughly set timing. Put some ether down her carb and kicked her over, (no gas in tank) and she ran for about 3 seconds. Sounded good. Came with steel running boards, all the beauty rings and hubcaps, the old engine (which i think threw a rod. Nice big hole on the top of the case.)
Hardware, shoes, and brake seals, and a lot of random parts.
Currently, im working on resealing the doors and windows, and putting a new black headliner up as the old one is discolored around the edges. Waiting on new door panels, oh shit hangers, and some accesories, to complete the interior.
Right now, i was windering, which is the push, and whicb is pull, on the fuel pump?
Want to make sure ive got my lines on right..and which line should get the filter?
Look forward to reading a learning, and sharing my experiences with you all

Welcome to the world of air cooled VWs - and to The Samba.
Connect the top fitting to the fuel line coming from the tank and the bottom one to the carb. And mount your filter up under the car near where the fuel line comes out of the tunnel. There is real danger of 'firing' up your beetle if that plastic filter comes into contact with hot parts - and there are lots of them inside the engine compartment. _________________ 71 Ghia Coupe - stock body - no rust! Welcome to the world of VW's. Also known as the world of back-to-basics.
Here's a visual picture of what was already mentioned above. Your pump is the one in the bottom-left corner of this picture.

Nice looking bug.
There is something to be said for bumpers, however.
Still--the bug looks great.
Make it safe!
