Nubie here...only owned ths 87 Westy for 6 months or so..anyway, I replaced the air filter today, and now it won;t even turn over...I keep checking the various things i might have accidentally disconnected when lifting out the air filter housing...the only thing I found was a purple tube that runs to the cannister..got that plugged in again, but she won't turn over at all...any ideas?
It ran fine yesterday...
thanks!

Just to be clear -- when you turn the key nothing happens?

No cranking? No click? No sound of the fuel pump briefly running?

hi-
The instrument cluster red warningl lights come on ( as is normally did when i started it before) I think i hear the fuel pump running...the headlights come on ok, and they dim or go out when I try to start it...it kind of acts like its in gear and wont engage starter...
but i realized i drove it fine yesterday, and the day before, but did not start it today before the air filter replacement so know i question if the problem is not related to the filter...i have the battery charging now...could be a low battery, and that would be embarrasing! the charger is drawing 16.3 volts which seems a bit high....at 20 amps...
i probably will let it charge overnight and see what happens..
thanks

Update- tried jump starting- same problem...not turning over...I guess I'll start with the checking the starter...but all I can assume is I accidentally pulled a wire somewhere when I lifted the air filter assembly out..

If that is the case (and it might well be) just say "Never mind, I figured it out and fixed it".

Okay -- Seems unlikely you could create the problem while working on the air filter, but if a jump wont's crank it then yes, starter connections (and ignition switch) are good places to start looking.

Wondering if you maybe bumped the trigger wire on the starter getting the filter housing in or out? Maybe give the spade connector a wiggle...

Well, I wiggled all the wires, etc, but the darn thing still won't turn over...guess I'll have to haul it over to the guys at Northend Wrench...they know VWs better than me!
I tried jogging the starter by rocking it back and forth in gear, but it seems to freewheel...

Give the starter a few hammer taps - you wouldn't be the first guy with a sticky solenoid...

Check your ignition switch. Remove the two Phillips screws holding the plastic cover on your steering column. With that off, you can unplug the harness plug that attaches to your ignition switch. Now you can jumper the terminals that operate the starter using a piece of wire.

Here are links showing the replacement of the ignition switch:

There is such a thing as coincidence. It could be coincidence and have nothing to do changing the air filter. You can take it to an expert and pay them to guess, or you can take the free advice here, and figure it out and have a much more intimate understanding of your van. This should be easy to trouble shoot with just a volt meter.

remove air cleaner assy again - and check each wire in that corner carefully - don't just wiggle

get under and examine every wire on starter

I am sorry, but you did check the voltage at the battery with a volt meter at rest and while trying to crank it? If I had to guess, it sounds like you may have run the battery down while working on the van. A bad battery won't help you jump it.

HI: Trust me, I appreciate the free advice on here and am trying to get this rolling before throwing in the towel and taking it in...
Voltage check- 12.50 at rest...drops only to 12.12 or so when turning ignition key...fuel pump hums, lights on dash light up...just no crank...getting ready o jack it up and crawl under to use a remote starter cable...wife says I am not allowed to go under any vehicle thats jacked up unless she's here...but she's at work...Smile

Don't crawl under a vehicle on a jack, but do so with JACK STANDS...(big difference!)

HI:
Finally returned from a long trip to Seattle...where I saw more vanagons than anywhere!
Anyway, I wanted to post a follow up on this thread, and to thank everyone who had great suggestions...
The problem was the starter..obviously! The air filter replacement turned out to be pure coincidence... my Westy is now happily back on the road!

Thanks all
dave
