I know this is a pretty stupid topic... but I did my first u turn today at a light.

HOLY CRAP! Are all vanagons this good or do I have something wrong? It's crazy, I can turn on a dime and I undercut the car in front of me (Corolla).

U turns are fun! Laughing

All Vanagons are that good, nothing is wrong. Cool

I couldn't believe it when I tried to U-turn my wife's Civic into the same parking spot I normally used for the van and it turned into a 3 point turn.

Vanagons are also great in angled parking spots when there's no one near you. (with the curb in front)... just crank the wheel over and drive forward. We don't need to stinkin' reverse!

I've read here that the power steering vans don't turn quite as sharp as the manual steering vans, but they both turn well!

No front engine equals more room for the wheels to turn!

Our Tacoma is sooo pathetic Mad, three, sometimes four point turns! Even our little two door Geo Sidekick doesn't turn any better than the Vanagon, and it's half the length!

p.s. Have both power and manual Syncros and the turning radius is pretty close to being equal.

I like how you can still make a turn even after you have driven past it.

Such is the nature of a cab-forward design.

Power steering has a turning circle of 35.8 ft vs 34.5 ft for a manual rack. So manual is about 1 foot 4 inches tighter. Per the Vanagon.com model year summary page.

I asked about this in this thread. Thanks for the info.
More Vanagon info on this page.

It's also kinda fun when the passenger up front is new to Vanagons. They often raise their feet as the van clears the curb w/ feet to spare.

Hahahaha, yeah, seeing someone's reaction when they're new to the vans in relation to proximity is fun!

I pulled into a parking space that abutted a brick wall with a newbie once, he had a rather nervous reaction when coming to a stop a couple feet from the wall Smile

I think the question is what the hell is wrong with all other cars/trucks ?!?
when I borrow the shop ford van from work it's like utterly ridiculous how crappy the suspension and steering is on that thing.

So much fun, and handy when traveling. Missed the turn? One moment...

I'm at the point where my wife razzes me if I miscalculate and have to stop and reverse to compete the turn. From her perspective, it can be done *anywhere.*
