PostPosted: Sun Mar 23, 2014 8:45 pm    Post subject: rear shock question. Reply with quote

I have a 74 baja that im working on. I installed lift spindles and raised the rear one notch. So now I need rear shocks. I dont want to drill out another hole so that stock size shocks will work, besides they are worn out and need replaced anyway.
so what im asking is if anyone has found shocks from a particular vehicle (vehicle make and year) that has worked for thier car. I dont need anything fancy this is just a trail riding car.

I know you said you want to do some trail riding but that can mean so many things. Woods, sand, etc.

Also are you one to go beating on it or just out to have a little fun with the car?

Give me some ideas on what your going to do with it and I can help you get some ideas on what you should do here.

If you want to call to discuss it I can also help you out.

No im not going to beat on it, mainly just have fun on established forest trails occasionally some mud. Not going to go fast either. Im running the stock shocks up front and dont want to spend a bunch of money for rear ones they just need to be the right size because of the 1 notch lift in the rear.

If you haven't notched the spring plate you should be able to use stock shocks. Stock size kyb gas adjust shock is a good choice.

I forgot to mention but yes I did notch the spring plates. My stock rear shocks are about 1" short to the original bolt hole now.

It's real easy. measure from mount to mount for full droop to full extension and add 1/2" travel so the shock doesn't bottom out. Then go to a shock vendor website and try to match your measurements to one of their shocks.

Here's a link to the Rancho list that I used when I searched for my shocks. RS5000 can be had for around $50/ea. which is pretty decent.

I would go with something like a gas shock in this application.
Stock shocks are oil. The KYB Gas-A-Just shocks work well for easier off-roading.

We won't be able to help him out really until we figure out how much length he has.

T2 shocks are 22" I think there going to be to big.

Ok I think im doing something wrong.
for the extended I jacked up the car until the tire was off the ground. I measured center of upper shock mount hole to center of lower shock mount hole and got 17-1\4".

For compressed I jacked up on the lower shock mount until the tire raised off the ground and I got 15" still measuring center of shock mount holes. Does that sound correct? Or is there a different way I should measure?

You need to take the wheel off, tie a chain around the jack and the car frame (around the shock area works for me) then jack up the hub (shock bottom whatever) until the rubber stop hits its stop. that is full compression. You wont be able to measure this unless you hold the body frame down, other wise the car just keeps lifting and the suspension wont compress.

i will add i am redoing my rear suspension and i have 11.5" to 17" ( my shock bottoms have been cut and raised an inch) i didnt really look at the kybs ,after getting bilsteins in the front i appreciated how much a good shock makes a difference ( i have been happy all along with my KYBs) yad yada .. anyway the only shocks that i could find that actually would fit the travel and size were very expensive bilstein5165,s part # 25 187878

have you checked your cv's? if you notched the spring plate they may not articulate enough for the new travel. no problem..just means more upgrades$
