hi guys. after waiting for a few months, this august 1962 deluxe bus finaly arrived begin of this month.

as I always liked my current "repainted" 65 standard, I really wanted something else that had a patina look, but was mecanically sound!

my favorite model remains a 15window, so when this one popped up, I went for it. it needs LOTS of work but thanks (again!) to my buddy Luc, it's comming along great.

It's a fried egg model, but still with the 9 outward facing air vents. It was the first month of the 1963 model, so already with the higher dog legs.

Here are some pictures :

as posted here on TheSamba

as arrived in Belgium. "damn a lot of work" Laughing not to worry... Wink

The intention is to build this bus keeping it's current look, but having a solid rust free bottom.

Yes there will have to be some serious paint blending, but I don't care, I'd rather have blend paint then get killed in traffic due to the poor condition of the bus

started making some small patches where needed, leaving as much og material intact as possible..

a lot more to come in the next days Wink a difficult challenge was to see how far we could go without messing up the original looks of this bus. I DON'T want it to be a restored bus, there has to be lots of surface rust, paint chips, dents and scratches that 50 years on the road created...

Nice work so far, that Bus does look familiar to me.

If you feel like changing it, this Bus should have middle seat mounting plates that look the same as the rear seat mounts. Lose the huge plates.

hey Everett, thanks for the tip, how should that floor look? Can it be adjusted?

When ordering online the floor plates always say 55-67 Laughing

what do you mean, it's a 62 so it has fried eggs.

would you weld bullets in on a 62?

bullets are cool, but they wouldn't be correct on this bus

i am a rebel like that, you do what you want, i realize that the fried eggs are correct, i just never "loved" them on any of my buses.

I drove my 59 beetle with "winkers" at a time where the TUV made you take them out...

I FTF on my 63, on a 62 its harder to tell due to the flat lips on the rear wells. If you "fixed" the dash pod and painted the dash lower color it would be almost impossible to tell without looking at the vin or mcode plate.

Are you sure that bus is a 62? The lips on the rear wheel well are a 63 later thing (July 30 1962).

Just an FYI, Euro 62s still had bullets.

Edit: just looked through the database again and didnt find any 63s that looked like yours. Unfortunately many of the pics that were taken from the classifieds no longer exist, I guess EB deleted many old pics lately making forum posts useless in some cases.

he did say august 62, making it a 63.

has always been a dilemma for me, i was born in August 63 and i always liked the 62s better than my birthday month Sad

bullets are important to me, i would have to "fix" that if it was mine, and i would absolutely want it. my birthday is coming up! anybody?

correct, it's an august '62, making it the first month the '63 model came out. The thin dogleggs are also a give away.

What do you mean a bus actually build in '63 looks different, what differences are you talking about.

the only difference for an actual built in 63 bus would be the innie vents on late 63, bastard 1 ton brakes, and the 1500 air cleaner mount.

Hmmmmmm...getting ready to finish up my floors this week. What do ya'll think about welding them from below like this as opposed to the more common way...from above?

Weld through from above (having cleaned, primed and painted the tops of the chassis rails that will no longer be accessible when the floor is in....mark and remove paint from the spots where the welds will go)
