|
|
Hey guys,
I searched the samba, and I haven't found how people have successfully removed the original oil pressure sender between cylinders 3 and 4 and the pushrod tubes on the driver's side. I have removed the engine tin, unplugged the original brown wire plugging into the case, but now there is a male spade terminal coming out of a large nut going into the case.
I called Van Cafe, and they instructed me to remove the spade terminal from the nut, i.e. do not use a wrench to remove the nut because then I would need a new sealing washer. He instructed me to use channel locks on the area between the spade and nut, which is about 1/2" deep. It's enough space to get channel locks on there, but I couldn't budge the thing. I did succeed in chewing it up with two attempts. Grrr.
What did you guys do to get this part out of the case? Is it safe to wrench that thing out of there and then re-use the sealing washer? Sorry to messy up the forum with such a simple issue, but I really appreciate someone's help who was been through this before!
Thanks a lot! _________________ Dave

I put in the VC kit last year. My (flawed) memory is that the old oil pressure sender must come out, that is where their T manifold screws in, and I think I used a socket.
I also remember they might have the instructions available online under the product description, not sure about that though.
Sounds like possible miscommunication with VC.
Hope that helps. Our kit seeped a little at first, so I resealed a connection and been working great since. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

Have you a 24mm deep socket? Try it. _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

As I recall I did not have a 24mm deep socket but found an SAE deep socket that was close enough to undo it.
As mentioned, it had to come out to connect whatever is going to the sender for the gauge (in my case a hose). You will probably want to re-use the little sender you are taking out so you still have the warning light too. |

stay awayfrom that channel lock idea one slip and you could puncture or dent a pushrod tube, then it could leak oil! the tubes are very thin.
get a deep socket and extension and do it right.
I put a hose at that location that goes to a manifold then i put an oil manifold block up top in the engine bay to screw in my pressure sendor for my gage, and both stock pressure switches. thus i retained my stock pressure warning system and made for easy access for the two switches and my new pressure gage sendor, they are now also out of the dirt and heat of under the engine.
In place of the stock pressure switch located near the water pump, I installed an oil temperature sendor, and now have an oil temperature gage.
